BTW..............California...............the only state where people ***** about paying $3 a gallon for gas, but will pay $5 for a 24 oz cup of coffee............... :eek2:[/B]

oh so true......starbucks and all rip-off joints can kiss my @$$.

With gas prices going up, so does the cost of food and everything else. Fresh organic fruits and veggies at Farmer's Markets this summer will probably be cheaper than the sale prices ar the grocery stores. (At least anywhere there are still small farmers, like No Cal and even So Cal, especially down San Diego way.)
Not to mention the cost of fish, coral, and live rock!

LOL!

On the boycott issue -- Exxon, et al are so flush with cash they can go a long time without selling anything. Besides, the industry is intermingled and incestuous. It does no good to boycott Exxon if you then drive over to Arco and buy the top and bottom layers from Exxon storage tanks that Exxon doesn't want to use.

Your local gas franchisee doesn't necessarily sell 100% gas refined by their franchise. The difference between brands is mostly about proprietary additives; Chevron refineries are happy to sell gas to whomever wants to buy it, minus the additives they give to their franchisees.

Never mind transport and delivery issues.

The only people a boycott will hurt are the franchisees -- the local guys who are taking the brunt of consumer outrage but aren't taking home the big bucks because they are getting shafted by the oil companies, too.

The cars I listed I can actually fit in :) If you are over 6', Yaris will be like a geo metro. The Civic is just barely big enough for me.

I see your point about pricing tho. I got the Civic because it was the cheapest option at the time ($30k for a Prius in '04). Plus I got these cool carpool stickers that let me commute in the carpool lane.

Have you been in one? That thing is at least the size of a civic.

I think alternative energy sources are being invented every year, not just the crack pot ones but things that really work and would sound like Sci Fi to the public.

The problem is, look at who is getting the funding to search for alternative energy! What do you think is going to happen if one of their scientist finds something?
This planet is so wrapped up in personal greed that it becomes pointless to even dream of solutions to Global warming and Alternative energy. People don't want to hear about it, they just want to live there lives exactly as they have before with no restrictions or sacrifices.

I agree that they may do something stupid but should we do nothing and just suffer slow economical death? As for "There really isn't much they can do" is not really true. They could vote to repeal the tax exceptions for the oil giants! If this does not work then they could incentives us with larger rebates for Biodiesel, E85, Hydrogen, fuelcell and electric vehicles. Remember this is still a market of supply and demand, currently we have been foolish since the 70's by not creating a market for alternative energy for our country, The price of oil in Europe and Asia has been high for quite a while now but still they have not invented a new energy plan. I think we need our world scientists to collaborate and our governments to phase in these alternate energy systems. IMHO

Thanks

UMMMMMMMM. I have seen the blue prints to the engine that runs on water. and a 6 cylinder motor that runs on a watch battery......A FREAKIN WATCH BATTERY!! We all know that there are inventions to save us but its about the dang money!! ITS JUST A CONSPIRACY!!:mad2:

anyways the price we pay for gas pales in comparison to the majority of the world. imagine paying $3-4 per liter. thats roughly $11-15 per gallon

But I don't think health insurance costs $600 month for a husband and wife in many of those places. There is some additional value received in most cases.

BTW... IBTL. :)

look at their tax rates. then you will see why their health insurance costs are lower per month. either way, they are paying for it.

If today some mad scientist comes up with alternate energy and publishes in any of the scientific magazines, there will be 1000's of investors at their door, including me! I think with the advent of the web it is getting harder to keep a secret, especially of this proportion. And it will be due to greed we will want new forms of energy, after all there is never enough power, Scotty :0 IMHO.

Does any one know of web site dedicated for alternate energy?

Thanks

if they ever come out with a decently stylish hybrid that somehow actually has some muscle, then, and only then, will i get one ;)

...BUT, I "need" a truck for work, so i can still complain about getting bent over at the pumps, no?!
...and i may complain, with reason, but at least i'm driving my truck home, not a toy car ;)

Another plan..............all Americans should get together & boycott one oil company. Do not buy any gas from that company until they lower thier prices by 50%. I can almost guarantee that within 2 weeks, the boycotted companies prices will be cut in half. Once one company cuts thier prices & gets most of the business from consumers, others will follow.
Steve :D

Here is why this won't work, and will probably raise prices in the long run. Everyone boycotts a particular gas station and goes to the other gas stations to purchase gas. Because of the laws of supply and demand, the increased demand at the other gas stations will drive prices up at those gas stations. As soon as there is a noticable cost difference due to the other stations prices rising, people will give up on the boycott and purchas gas at the store that was being boycotted. Now they will have increased deman, and they will see other stores selling gas at a higher price and raise their prices to match the other stores.

NPR interviewed an economist at Ohio State Universtity concerning the email floating around about this.

When I lived in Sacramento, I used to work down the street from the California Fuel Cell Partnership. They had fuel cell cars driving around all the time racking up the miles for road testing. (They had fuel cell cars in Davis 25 years ago.)

The American car companies had little tiny impractical mini cars like fuel cell Geos. Toyota was working on a station wagon and Hyundai and Nissan had SUVs. (Actually Nissan's looked like an SUV/minivan combo.)

Wonder which cars average customers are likely to buy?

There was a good program on the BBC World Service this morning on hydrogen fuel, it's progress and how far it has to go. You can podcast it on the BBC web site, if you are interested.

Just what I heard Ca has the highest prices in the nation and Santa Barbara / San Luis Obispo counties has the highest in CA. Proud to live here in the central coast highest in the nation feels good to be number one in something.
What saves me is I have a company truck that the gas is paid for (company credit card). My drive daily is around 90 miles a day one way from Santa Maria to Santa Barbara and driving from job site to job site in Santa Barbara each day. Filling up 2 times a week on average, last fill up was around 103.00 for the tank. The construction company I work for has over a 100 trucks on the road daily, I do not even want to guess a monthly gas bill for them. Short note they have jobs from San Diego to Fresno and between.
Other hand my girl friend is a teacher and has a 4 mile round trip daily drive and my personal truck I drive about once every 2 weeks. Yes my monthly gas bill is not that high, but what the company pays to keep me on the road stresses me pushing me harder to earn a profit for them on there jobs to over come the high gas prices. To the point where I wake up during up in the middle of the night worrying about it.
Well just 2 more years of an oil baron pres and vp. What does not kill us will only make us stronger!!

As far as for Hydrogen cars, Shell,EXXon and the rest are going to be the suppliers of Hydrogen. So we will end up in the same predicament(Gouging).
However private companies can go into the business, but wont have the Mula to start up as the oil companies..

There is a guy in the Glendale area that goes around collecting used cooking oil. They pay him for the disposal and he uses it to run his diesel truck. I was driving behind him and his exhaust smelled like french fries....:lolspin:

Re: Re: Re: Doing something!

Re: Re: Re: Doing something!

Coincidental that you use that to be funny, since most of the rumors that I have heard revolve around ideas just like that. It's not a question of coming up with a new fuel source, its making known ones more practical to make. The rumor is that oil company scientists have invented ways of separating out Hydrogen and Oxygen from water in a very economical way, I am not saying an easy method just one that makes it very practical $$ Wise to do! Now if you think that the oil companies would let this stuff go public when they have trillions invested in oil rigs around the world and are making record profits, you are just a wishful thinker. BTW you do realize that it is the big oil companies that get the most government grants to research alternative fuel sources LOL.

Re: Re: Re: Doing something!

If life was only that simple.
You can't do this kind of work without getting noticed, and once your noticed, outside people start monitoring your work. When the people who are monitoring realize that you are starting to have a break through, even if it's one that you may not even realize but one that they know is going down a dangerous path, they then come in and offer you enormous sums to sell out. Now at this point most companies are so strapped for cash that they think it's a God send so they sell out, after that the work is bottled up and stored away by the new owners.

I don't subscribe to that theory. If you're smart enough to develop a new technology to compete with oil, you're smart enough to realize that you would make so much money that you can overtake the oil companies. I do believe however that oil is still relatively cheap enough that it is not worth dumping enough resources into alternative energy. Oil prices are still not that high, adjusted for inflation. It's just these spikes in gas prices that have people complaining. If the prices go up smoothly, no one would be complaining except for the occasional reminiscing of old times.
