OT Grouper Fishing

Does anyone have any good coordinates for grouper spots that they would be willing to share? Not too far out probably about 40-50ft of water. Not looking for the normal reefs but places where you have found fish. Also looking for someone to go out with that might be willing to split costs(Fuel, bait,Ice) Or ill go out with you and split costs.

You can bring jugs to get water. :)

I go out of Pass a grille

I have 18-21 CC

Hey Mike,

Why dont you fish the channel inside the bay? Lots of Groups there. IM me and I will give you a good starting point. Holidays are keeping me really busy, but would love to get out with you sometime.

Ever tried trolling for grouper? That's how I do it. Look for a 'Mann's Stretch 30' with a read head and white body. Try trolling the shipping channel from the skyway east on the south side of the channel from the bridge to about 3/4 mile from the bridge. You can put in at Maximo Moorings.

Don't ask me how I know this... and you don't need a GPS/Loran

Banker John what speed do you troll at and what size grouper you pulling out of that area?
I was about 11 miles straight out of Johns pass tuesday but only a few maybe 14"ers. My friend has pulled quit a few 2'+ out of the same area.

You have to get them going first, as stated above troll the shipping channel with a deep diving plug, you have to go fast enough the get the plug down but not too fast or try trolling a large heavy feathered jig. Once you find them (after you catch 1 or 2 trolling the same spot) anchor and go with live bait.....

Not much help w/ grouper, but let me know when you want snook and reds. Here's my buddy's site and we've fished together A LOT

Awesome Fishing:D

P.S. If you click the tarpon button, that's me on the left w/ a Flamingo tarpon.

I wanted to go out to hard bottom for some reds(I get water for the tank too). But I am up for trying some trolling too. Usually if we fail offshore we just hit one of the bridges so we can catch something. I will probably be fishing almost everyday after christmas because I'm off work so send me a pm if you are up for some fishing.
I am not a certified diver but will be soon. I would love to learn how to spear.
Anyone see the "conservationist" that did this?

For trout we usually hit up the grass flats around Tarpon key. There are some nice fat ones all around there.

I launch from Tierra Verde Marina.

mrferrit,
Nope, that tarpon was caught down in Flamingo...I've not had much luck around the bay although I know people that slam 'em...Down in the glades area, they're so thick even a doofus like me can catch 'em...
Mike, I sold my Actioncraft several months ago (son turned 16 if you know what I mean), so now I just kayak and fish, but I know some great snook spots - we catch them at night on fly tackle - what a blast...however, it might be too cool for them right now.

hey mike do you need ice ?
i have a ice machine here at work i can get like 10 bags if needed if every goes as planned

For trolling, I use Mann's stretch 30's. I run the lure back about 100' behind the boat on 30# mono. I free spool the lure whil the boat drives away from the lure. When you set the hard drag, hold on, the lure has a HUGE pull!. Put it in the rod holder and trioll. The lure will run about 25-30' depending on speed.

I use a regular trolling rod, not a spinner. To get the speed right, it is about 4-5 knots. The best way to tell the right speed is to watch the rod tip when you are at about 4 knots. Watch the rod tip for a vibration wiggle - you may need to go a little faster or slower until you get that specific resonation from the lure back to the rod tip... you'll know it when you see the rod tip wiggle.

You will DEFINATELY know when you hook a fish too. You will thing the rod will either break or pull out of the rod holder.

For colors, I prefer the white body with a red head and a mullet color (silver holographic body with a darker black back) for up in the bay. When I am out in cleaner water off shore, I still keep the white w/ red head, but will opt for a green back. If in very blue water (like out in 50'+ water), I will change to the blue back with the chartruese and pink body.

I tie a 150# snap swivel to the line with no leader. I only use a leader if the king fish are running, because they will cut you off and - ooops, there goes a $13 lure. The reason for the snap swivel is to make changing out a lure very quick, in case one needs to replace a hook. You can swap them out in about 5 seconds with a snap swivel.

GOOD LUCK and let us know how you do trolling, if you in fact do try it!
