For trolling, I use Mann's stretch 30's. I run the lure back about 100' behind the boat on 30# mono. I free spool the lure whil the boat drives away from the lure. When you set the hard drag, hold on, the lure has a HUGE pull!. Put it in the rod holder and trioll. The lure will run about 25-30' depending on speed.
I use a regular trolling rod, not a spinner. To get the speed right, it is about 4-5 knots. The best way to tell the right speed is to watch the rod tip when you are at about 4 knots. Watch the rod tip for a vibration wiggle - you may need to go a little faster or slower until you get that specific resonation from the lure back to the rod tip... you'll know it when you see the rod tip wiggle.
You will DEFINATELY know when you hook a fish too. You will thing the rod will either break or pull out of the rod holder.
For colors, I prefer the white body with a red head and a mullet color (silver holographic body with a darker black back) for up in the bay. When I am out in cleaner water off shore, I still keep the white w/ red head, but will opt for a green back. If in very blue water (like out in 50'+ water), I will change to the blue back with the chartruese and pink body.
I tie a 150# snap swivel to the line with no leader. I only use a leader if the king fish are running, because they will cut you off and - ooops, there goes a $13 lure. The reason for the snap swivel is to make changing out a lure very quick, in case one needs to replace a hook. You can swap them out in about 5 seconds with a snap swivel.
GOOD LUCK and let us know how you do trolling, if you in fact do try it!
