OT: help my job hunt

If anyone out there can help me. I have been looking for a job now for a couple of months with little success. So I decided to see if anyone out there can help me. Currently I am an engineering student at UMSL in a joint program with Wash U and have only a couple semesters of night classes left before I graduate. I am looking for a full time position in the mechanical engineering field. Even a co-op or paid internship would work for now. I’m just trying to get my foot in the door and start building up my experience. If anyone works at an engineering firm or knows someone whose is hiring please let me know.

Is it that hard to find a job with an engineering degree? I mean, that really sucks if it is because that's a field my stepson is considering going into in the next couple of years.

The thing is I dont have a degree yet. I will this summer. Im looking to start somewhere like a coop while I finish up my last couple of classes at night. If I had a degree all ready my resume would look much better to potential employers.

If you wanted to relocate .... I work in the Machine engineering group here www.tgmissouri.com. They employ tons of engineers, mechanical,quality, you name it. I believe they start the engineers somewhere in the high 40's just out of school. My group in particular is looking for a ME right now. Check them out. They have the best benefit package/retirement I have seen. You get 3 wks vacation after 2 yrs of service with a max of 5 wks. Also paid shut downs in July and December, each 1 wk long. Only and hour from STL.

Wow, I do not think I have ever heard of a MechE from STL needing a job. I agree with Mayo in that I could find you a Civil, ArchE, or Environmental job fairly quickly. I possibly could do EE too, but not Mech's.

What kind of Mechanical are you looking at? I know that large companies (i.e. Cat, Boeing, John Deere, GM, Ford, etc) seem to always offer interviews for grads or soon-to-be grads. I can ask around and see what I can dig up, but I am not in the Mech E field. Are you willing to move for a job?

seeing as I still have school left I cant relocate. The kind of Mechanical engineering I would like to do is design and development. Anthing that deals with coming up with a concept and making it happen. Im not all that interested in airplanes and cars but I will take what I can get to start off. I am really interested in robotics, medical mechanics, facilities design, or anything for now.

Thanks bobby that would be great if it was a little closer. I dont think with still having school it wouldnt be possible. But I will keep in mind for when I graduate.

my little brother just graduated with an ME degree (he's up in Minn) though

here are a few things....typically you would try to "land" a job while you still have a semester left, this is very normal, they know you dont have the degree yet, but will in a few months, so then they start you after you graduate

my brother, just for the hell of it, put his resume on monster, he didnt get a call from monster for weeks, then he actually started at his real job as an engineer, and about a month later 5 people from monster called him for interviews (obviously too late), so monster actually does work, but you have to give it about 1.5-2 months

giant places that hire tons of engineers are pretty much always open for new employees, so if y ou say I'll be available May 10th, they'll hire you for May 10th............don't sweat the not having a degree yet thing, its very normal...they dont expect you to wait until youre graduated to start looking for a job

check olin brass website thats where i work but recently on website i saw there were hiring some different kinds of engineers there, been hiring alot there just about highest pay as far as trades go in illinois, not sure about engineers though. Alot of retirees in last 2 years and many more going out like one big group retiring at same time.

your in a different field but olin been hiring machinist, tool and die and electricians, pipefitters, pays 24.83 and 25.63 an hour, forklift operator 19.80 an hour, crane operators hire in full pay scale at 21.00 an hour, but probally a bit of a drive for you. All trade workers hire in full pay scale but production workers start out lower and wage progress by hours worked.
