OT: Laptop will not start, flickering keyboard lights-black screen

Hey everyone,

Just opened my laptop this morning and when I go to turn it on the keyboard lights up but the computer doesn't make any startup noise. Then after the keyboard lights being on for about 12 seconds and the screen is still black, the keyboard lights turn off and then back on again and this cycle repeats.

I had my internal wireless card go out on me a couple weeks back and now this. I have a couple dental admission test software I downloaded on it and would like to fix the problem as a whole or at least get those programs if possible.

So if anyone has any idea, the help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time,

-Matthew

I'm pretty sure its not a HD problem. I researched this same issue for my sister-in law about a year ago. If I recall it has to do with heat management or something like that. There is a video on youtube on how to fix it. It's very common on HPs. At least the older ones.

Is either processor, motherboard, graphic card is burned buddy! Personally I wouldn't fix it due to HP will soon be gone. HD should still be good.

its prob the hard drive i had mine do the same thing and it was that. at least thats what hp told me when i sent it in under warranty.

Thanks for the help everyone.

My biggest concern is getting this dental admissions test program out of the computer. The way the program works is I purchased it online and was able to download it to only one computer at that time. So I'm not sure if I can still get that off the hard drive.

Matt, definetly will take you up on that offer to access a copy of my hard drive. Thanks!

So now that I have a broken laptop, what are the best laptops on the market for the best price? I use my laptop for school daily so I need to figure this out soon. Also why is HP so bad? What brands are good?

Thanks again everyone for your help.

call hp and they can see if it was part of the recall on the NVIDIA video cards. If it was one, they might just replace the computer. The Hard drives are usually ok if thats the case....

Any Alienware R1 laptop, anything R2+ is just Dell rebranded crap!

Nothing better on the market as far as laptops.

Mac book :D FYI apple has a student discount as well. If you need to run windows on it. Just partition the drive and install Win 7.

Two years ago I vowed to never buy another HP laptop. Some of the Sonys are nice as well. Just do your research.

If you are a student go with the Mac. You can run Windows and Mac Os 10 lion. I also agree that sony's are great. By the way your Pc does it p.o.s.t. or can you get to the bio? have you tried updating the Bio's? I would try that first. hp's have motherboard issues and ram issues not hard drive issues as they do not make the hard drive.

I've had my macbook for 3 years and still going strong. In the meantime i've owned a few windows laptops also. Acer, Dell, and an asus. May they all r.i.p. Asus are good until something goes wrong. Their customer service sucks. The macbook was the best electronic investment ive done in years.

I would love to try a mac but, I just don't have the money now. I don't know what you mean when you say p.o.s.t. and bio.

Thanks again everyone

POST = Power On Self Test. BIOS = Basic In Out System

If your not seeing anything on the LCD you can't tell if it's POSTing.

Couple suggestions:

First Suggestion
1. Remove the battery and AC power from the laptop.
2. Hold down the power button for a full 60 seconds (discharging all capacitors)
3. Next plug in AC power only and try to power it on

Second suggestion
1. Try connecting an external monitor to it's VGA port to see if your getting anything there.

If nothing yet PM me as I'm certified on these POS's lol
