OT: My dog was attacked by Pit bull

:angryfire: My dog Molly was attacked by a pit bull while trick or treating tonight in my neighborhood. It came out from owners house and latched onto Molly. Owner came out and had to hit it a few times so that the dog would release it's grips. Luckily my wife and kids were OK. Molly was bleeding ,have a puncture wound and a limp. We are taking her in 1st thing in the morning to get check out. My daughter is terrified and crying for hours now. My wife had a talk with the owner and she has agreed to pay for vets bills. Now things have calmed down a bit.

So my question is:
So should I report this incident to the cops? in case it happens again but to a kid instead of a dog
or incase it did this before and the police should be aware of more incident from this dog.

I effing love shih tzus! I have 3! I would of been ****ed! I would make them get rid of it or report the incident

But if there's already a bad rep on the pit, authorities will force them to get rid of it or they might take it away & put it down.. but its hard to say what you should do

When you take Molly in the vet should file some kind of report. I would make sure to get proof of vaccinations from the pits owner. Police most likely won't do anything for dog on dog only dog on person but still might be worth a phone call. I know when we walk ours we always carry mase just in case. I'm sorry about Molly but glad the family is ok.

Yes you should report it and you should actually go to emergency room to have her checked out. Dog bite wounds can be a lot worse than they seem and are much easier dealt with the earlier they are taken care of.

Every pit owner should have a break stick. I'm surprised that hitting it over the head worked.

The sticks rarely work in my experience...water hose in the ear or squirt gun with ammonia(head shot).....have both worked for me...although having a running water hose while under attack is less than ideal, I happened to have one ready that time....

Dog bites are recorded to animal control. A dog within my county may only have a certain number of bite before it's euthanized. There are a number of variables that probably went into the pit's aggression, one of them might have been the costume if your dog was wearing it. No dog should be allow to run out of a residence, regardless of breed type. In my opinion you should be proactive in assessing the potential for this dog to gain access to other pets and children, the cop nor the owner will. I would contact animal control and seek their assistance.

I'm sorry to hear that... It's really not a police matter, just make sure your dog is well. My shepherd would do something like that to another dog so I kept him away from the door last night. He's great with people, go figure...

Took Molly into the vet and she checked out OK besides the bruises. She also said molly got really lucky cuz the puncture wound was right at her jugular vein but didn't go deep enough. It appears the costume might had saved her. She seems to be OK and back to her normal self. :celeb1:

I was extremely ****ed when my wife called me at work to tell me what just happened. They wisely got rid of the dog today after they realized how vicious it was. :headwallblue:

We thought about it. This family with small kids had just moved into This neighborhood a month ago. She was extremely apologetic plus she realized the dog had to go. So we won't file any report or charges and just leave this behind us and move on since Molly is A OK.

A report will be filed when you tell the vet that your dog was bit by another dog.
No. Vet said its optional for owner to report since its dog on dog bite.

I heard wrong. My wife said the owner had a really hard time getting it to unlatch. He constantly punched the dog and threw hit weight onto it while also choking it.

That sucks, but that picture is awesome!

Thanks

My kids love the picture!!! Glad things didn't get real bad and everyone is ok..

What would happen if a owner refuses to pay?

Human bite is a little different than dog attacks. Most owners when shown the bill will offer to help/pay. HOAs can be notified but won't help recoup funds. RAC (rabies animal control) is a good one to notify but not always the easiest to get in touch with and won't help recover funds either but will follow up if humans were involved in a bite. The best bet would be to see if the homeowners insurance would cover the cost of a vet visit. For severe bites I have seen owner have to go to small claims court as pets are considered property.
From the trenches - so to speak (Local veterinarian) - Hope your little one is doing well.

I hate to tell you this: many owners of vicious dogs claim that they got rid of the dogs, but, in reality, they continue to keep them! Even though your dog is fine, the report must be filed so that it becomes documentation of the occurrence. Without your report, the incident never happened, in the eyes of the law.

This reminds me of a case over 20 years ago when a little girl was attacked and killed by a vicious dog. After the death of the child, that is when people lined up to say that they have all been attacked by the dog.

Don't get me wrong. The canine didn't know any better. It is the owner's fault, or series of faults: poor socialization, lack of training, wrong intention for having a pet, inappropriate choice of breeds...

Sorry, I used to have shih tzus and maltipoos. The image of your shih tzu brings back fond memories of my dogs. Your post touched a soft spot in my heart...

Awesome photo, glad it turned out for the better.

Just a correction, this very well could be a police matter. Some jurisdictions have laws regarding curbing your animals. Even if it's not a criminal matter in your city, it is certainly a civil matter that you could persue.

I don't believe there is an inappropriate breed. Just inappropriate owners. I go to a dog park with my labradoodle and sheepdog regularly. Pit bulls are some of the friendliest docile dogs there. Breed is far less relevant than how the dog is raised, socialized and trained. Any strong dog can cause serious injury to another dog or human. Just don't like that pit's get such a bad rap because they have powerful jaws.
