OT - owls

I know there are some bird people on the boards - any owl lovers?

I'm a casual bird watcher, but I think it would be really neat to attract something more than the usual robins/cardinals/chickadees/etc. I know there are owls near me, and I've always like owls, so I'm thinking about buying or building a couple of smaller owl boxes to see if I can attract a screech owl.

If that goes well, then maybe next year I'll think about barred or great horned owls. From what I have read, I don't think barn owls would be a good choice.

We were in florida last week.

Owls are more common than many people realize.

A couple of years ago there was a Great Horned Owl that always hung out in the trees near the 'S' curves on the 531 western expressway. I think it had a nest in the area.

I once saw a snowy owl sitting on Rte. 259 (just south of the CSX tracks in Chili) one dark winter night.

There's a great horned owl that hangs out behind our house nowadays. I never see it but I hear it every now and then.

LOL, that burrowing owl looks mad.

When I grew up in the Hudson valley I used to help my grandfather volunteer for a raptor center. Lot's of cool large birds and raptors that had injuries or had been imprinted and couldn't be released.

I remember that he used to wear a motor cycle helmet into most of the cages. Especially the owl cages. The air flows through their feathers so smoothly that they are virtually silent when they descend for an attack.
