OT - Planning on going to the Olympics?

How about this... Since I started the thread we'll say it encompasses the Olympics being held in China and all of the implications of it - one of the HUGE ones is China trying to clean up their city so all the visiting people will get to see what China wants them to see (Kind of like they do with their own people with the nature of their government)

I can see a little relation to the war. There are house members trying to urge Bush to not visit the olympics on a point of principal, but the last time I checked he has planned to go. I think there is also a list of countries with poor ethics in regards to human life and China was taken off the list shortly before the announcement of the Olympics.

Here's a quote from the Olympics website
"The Games have always brought people together in peace to respect universal moral principles. The upcoming Games will feature athletes from all over the world and help promote the Olympic spirit."

In this regard, all of the socio-political aspects of China versus a developed country are questionable at best. If you do consider the loans we have taken and what we put the money towards, the quality of life in China, and all of the other issues surrounding a foreign government and our relations to it, the Olympics should be not just a sporting event but a chance for all countries involved to evolve. Unfortunately, though, while the momentum of groups speaking up for the right to a better life for the people in China, it seems China would like nothing better than to deny, squelch, and censor what people say.

It will be very interesting to see how tourists are treated and what they run into at the games. Will the pollution clear up? Will they be allowed on a free internet to blog, email etc? I will have to make some popcorn to watch the games China plays with the Games.

Well, to be fair to the US with the growing concern of alternative fuels, for some reason we're going with Corn which is inefficient and pollutes the earth in a different way.

Check out this crazy algae bloom that is so-not-cool.

if the algea bloom is due to run off lets all go and plant mangroves along the coast where they are having problems and fix to concerns at once?

Mangroves should be growing along the coast where buildings haven't been built- I would think they grow too slow to impact the run off that much. Smaller algae cells versus a large plant.. its hard to compete with the tiny stuff taking off exponentially. Thats my educated guess anyway

if i feed the mangroves rose food aka nitrates, phosphates and get 2" a month in a controlled enviroment then there is no reason they can't do the work. if you watched survivor last night you could see all the seedlings that were washing on shore. not trying to bash but these kinda threads seems to hate instead of solve. i'm not saying i can change the world but i know over the years i have collected seedling due to them being over the road and not having impact and then replanting them in the sand bed. now if more people would do that instead of going to bars and noing nothing except please themselves then the whole situation might possibly be looked at in a diferent light. again not bashing you chris or anyone else it's that i just see some ***** ***** and oooo i'm concern and very little hey anybody want to come out and replant mangroves or cleanup the beach

hey Joe I spent my first 18 years growing up on a barrier island in SW florida. I was out there planting them when I could - when hurricanes blow over they really are a livesafer to the environment around them. I'm just thinking there would be a better way to help clean up the deadzones (or more efficient maybe is a better term?) I know in the part of FL I grew up in they were really protected, I'm not sure how the laws are around the rest of the gulf coast but ultimately the best solution would be away to get rid of or redirect in a better way the runoff that causes those blooms.

Red tide (dinoflagellate) and other blooms are also fueled by this stuff and I only hope there are better laws to come and soon to protect the ocean. Without it I think we'd be chopped liver.
