How about this... Since I started the thread we'll say it encompasses the Olympics being held in China and all of the implications of it - one of the HUGE ones is China trying to clean up their city so all the visiting people will get to see what China wants them to see (Kind of like they do with their own people with the nature of their government)
I can see a little relation to the war. There are house members trying to urge Bush to not visit the olympics on a point of principal, but the last time I checked he has planned to go. I think there is also a list of countries with poor ethics in regards to human life and China was taken off the list shortly before the announcement of the Olympics.
Here's a quote from the Olympics website
"The Games have always brought people together in peace to respect universal moral principles. The upcoming Games will feature athletes from all over the world and help promote the Olympic spirit."
In this regard, all of the socio-political aspects of China versus a developed country are questionable at best. If you do consider the loans we have taken and what we put the money towards, the quality of life in China, and all of the other issues surrounding a foreign government and our relations to it, the Olympics should be not just a sporting event but a chance for all countries involved to evolve. Unfortunately, though, while the momentum of groups speaking up for the right to a better life for the people in China, it seems China would like nothing better than to deny, squelch, and censor what people say.
It will be very interesting to see how tourists are treated and what they run into at the games. Will the pollution clear up? Will they be allowed on a free internet to blog, email etc? I will have to make some popcorn to watch the games China plays with the Games.
