OT Puppy Mill

So, my wife and I are shopping for a new puppy. We both want an English Bulldog. We found a breeder locally, and went to pick our puppy. I have never seen a more disgusting sight in my life. There were hundreds of dogs, all breeds, and dog crap everywhere. The smell . . . ug. We did not buy a puppy.

I just wonder what, if anything, I can do. This woman is allegedly selling AKC pups, so I wonder what the AKC would say about her little project.

Thoughts?

Good question, if no one else has a good idea I can contact a friend that runs a local rescue. I'm sure she has some input.

We just went through the same thing in Winfield with a German Shepard breeder.

I just shot off an email to the friend of mine to see if she has any suggestions. With the rescue work she does, I'm sure she see's/hears of this all the time... unfortunately.

Please let me know where this place is. I have a couple of friends who maybe able to have a look into this sort of thing.

This is what I'm being told.

"...the AKC couldn't care any less about what breeders do or don't do. They claim they are simply a "registry" for dogs and do not have any control over a breeder or breeding facilities (which is true)."

"There are rescue groups that are focused on closing puppy mills that should be contacted anytime a breeder is found to have an inferior facility. Also, the location should also be reported to the local humane society, although many do not have the funds to pursue charges against breeders. Kanawha County, does however, have the funds to do what is necessary and will act when things of this nature are reported. The problem is that the laws are so weak, what breeders should be going to jail for is not against the law, so people who report this type of neglectful situation feel the shelter is not doing its job. The shelter can only enforce the laws on the books, and unfortunately, the laws are very weak when it comes to providing a decent place for a dog to live."

"œ"¦The group that seized all of the dogs in that small dog puppy mill near Parkersburg sends me emails frequently. "¦They are very active against puppy mills and may be able to help the person who posted about the bulldog breeding facility."

I think the group in parkersburg has some info somewere on this site.

Oh, my friend mentioned breeding clubs (ie. American Boxer Club). She says poor conditions can cause puppy mills to be kicked out of the clubs because they do have ethical standards in which people are held to. So, that doesn't help solve the problem with the puppy mills in question but might be a good way for you guys looking for a pup to find a reputable breeder.

We got our two dogs from a rescue and it has been very rewarding. One was probably 5 years old the other a pup. The pup was thought to be a pure breed but they were found starving in a paper bag as very little guys and girls so they were not for sure. He is 3 now and we still aren't for sure but I wouldn't trade either one of them for anything. Oh, getting the adult was nice because she came house trained. :)

I saw over the weekend you posted this in the CORA forum too. Could you please post an update to this thread if you do hear of anything positive coming out of these posts?

Every email I have sent gets the same response. Call someone else. Nobody wants to do anything besides tell me it is someone elses problem. Sad.

i know a fella who lives in morehead who sells english bulldogs, i think he got out of breeding when he saw how hard it was to keep it going. now he sells dogs to petlands. he buys as many as he can and petland pays a flat rate per dog..
