OT - RC Airplanes

Decided to get back into a hobby I used to enjoy - RC Airplanes. Applied for my AMA membership tonight :bounce1: I've seen a few of you mention them before on here, so I figured I would ask.

What are some good flying fields around here? I live in Spring Hill, and would rather not drive 30 miles like I do for about everything else. I see one is down in Columbia. Any others in my area, or nearby?

Also, does anyone have any stuff for sale? Radios (2.4ghz, 6+ channel), equipment, etc. I am going for the larger aircraft, primarily giant scale / gas engine. If I do nitro I will only be looking for large 4 strokes.

A club meets and flies near Percy Warner Park, near the ball fields across from Steeplechase...at least they used to...you might google it...there is another club that flies in Springfield, but that would be a drive for you.

I have no idea what Steeplechase is but Percy Warner seems familiar and I think that's up past Brentwood, even. Both of those are too far for me.

Looks like the Columbia RC club flies quite close to me at Emory Cole Field. I'll be contacting those folks, 5 minutes is better than an hour. Thanks for the reply - appreciate it!

Cool!

I fly at Columbia. Of course I haven't gotten to much this year because of the crappy weather almost every weekend. I am hoping to make it down there this weekend. Have a new TRex 700E helicopter that I want to fly. There are a couple of people that fly gassers there. I have a 3W60 that has been sitting on my bench for a while waiting for a plane since I crashed my 80" Cap 232 but I doubt I will ever get a giant scale again. It has been in a crash and the ignition box has a couple of mounting tabs broken off but it did run after the crash. I would sell it for $175 if you need it.

Stop by sometime and see how you like it. Let me know when you are going and I'll try to be there if I can.

Oh snap... here it goes. :D

My Futaba 8U Super is quietly waiting in its case. Every once in a while it nudges me to buy a small electric, but so far I've been able to resist. :D

Did you ever get that plane you were telling me about, Zach?

Hah.

No, I decided it was much too small, and I don't want a nitro plane, I want a gasoline engine. Something much larger in the 7-8 foot wingspan range. I'll do a nitro eventually, but it will be a 4-stroke of some sort. Maybe a nice Saito radial in a Biplane.

Electric is completely off the table for me.

With the helicopters I have gone completely electric now. I was having engine problems with my 600N and a few weeks ago the engine leaned out drastically in flight and broke the piston. I got fed up with it and found a great deal on Ebay for a Trex 700E (90 size electric) and I bid on it expecting to be outbid. For some reason nobody else even bid on it. :) This thing had unreal power. Hopefully I can go flying on Saturday but I had a piece of metal taken out of my eye and they dilated it. My vision is much better today than yesterday but I want to make sure it is 100% before flying.

Hope you get to go flying today, Michael. :)

I'm hoping to do a mixture of electric and nitro, personally. I probably won't ever have anything large enough for gas, but who knows? :)

Since I sold my tank here at home, maybe I can use that as an excuse to get a small electric plane once we get moved. :D

Getting a small nitro or electric would be perfectly reasonable! No radio expense, you already have that

Never say never on the gas plane. More fuel efficient than nitro and they sound like a real airplane flying by. If you really want one, you'll get one someday

I am waiting for my wife to get home and then I might go this afternoon. Or I might wait until tomorrow if it is too late.
The only reason I didn't get another gas plane was the size of it. It was a pain to transport it. It sure flew good though. I wish I had a trailer to haul one or two.

I agree, Zach... my radio keeps calling my name... :D Electric is a lot easier than nitro for now (much less field equipment... no starter, fuel pump, glow plugs, etc.... just a couple batteries and a dual charger :) ). And I didn't say never on gas, I said "probably" and much for the reason Mike pointed out, you pretty much have to have a trailer to haul it around! At the same time, I've seen people with so many nitro planes and helis that they got a trailer, anyway.

Went out to the flying field today. Two words - deliverance country - but the Columbia flying field is pretty excellent once you make it in. Met a few very nice folks too. Meeting up with a cool fellow with about 80+ planes later this week, he's willing to sell pretty much any of them so hopefully by next weekend I'll have a new rig. :) I think I'm going to do the Futaba 7C 2.4ghz or JR x9303 2.4ghz for radio.

I'm sure you didn't come in from the back roads like I do. It is out in the middle of nowhere. Down a twisty road and by a pig farm.:lol2:

Who did you meet? I almost went out Sunday but I had a lot to do around the house.

You don't happen to want to buy a heli do you? Since I have gotten my Trex 700E I have been wanting to sell my 600N. It is a great heli but I really like the size and power of the 700E.

lol.... it's a decent field, but ... wow. I met Bill and Paul - Mike I think was the other guy's name.

No heli for me - just going to do planes for now.

I have a Futaba 7C 2.4 on the way, should be here tomorrow with R617FS receiver, plus a bunch of field equipment as well. I think the smaller planes will be easier to transport for now, want to go bigger but it's not practical with my car. I'm thinking Funtana 90 with Saito 120.

Exactly. :) A couple of batteries for it (2250mAh 25c lipos) are about $20 each and a charger... good to go. :)

Brandon

Did you ever find a plane? If so are you going flying this weekend. I hope to get some flying in but first I have to work on the yard some today. :(

Oh, if you guys ever need to order some batteries I have gotten some really cheap ones from HobbyKing in Hong Kong. I have been using the Turnigys from them and have been really happy with them. Shipping is pretty expensive if you only order a battery or two but sometime maybe we could get a group order together and save on shipping.
