OT - RC Airplanes

Someone was selling a new Skywalker for $95 shipped on RCGroups so I jumped on it. I have been staring at the Radian Pro since I got it wondering how I am going to fit everything in it. I don't think I would ever be happy with it with all the extra weight on it. I think I learned a lot form the first Skywalker build to make this one work well.

A couple of days ago I got a Dragon OSD in the mail that I didn't order. I sent the guy a message and he said he mistakingly forgot that he already sent me one to replace my damaged one and I could have that one at a reduced price if I wanted it so I have a spare now. I also found a good deal on a GoPro so I ordered another one of those too. I might go ahead and stick some camera stuff on the Radian eventually too. I flew it last weekend and it will float around for a long time. I am still waiting on my Dragon Link and some stuff from Hobbyking to finish the Skywalker. Hopefully I will get them soon.

Are you going to show off any of this high tech RC at the frag swap?

Well all the FPV stuff is in seperate pieces right now and isn't really much to look at. Is there anything in particular you want to see? I could stick a heli in my truck or something if you want to see one. I will probably be coming to the swap unless something comes up.

I wouldn't mind seeing the skywalker and heli if it isn't too much trouble.

Got a chance to fly today on my lunch break. I attached a GoPro to the twinstar. Here is the footage, filmed in 720P 60. Its long, but nice detail with HD. Was a little windy when I got some altitude, not to mention COLD. My hands were freezing, lol..... I love the sound of the twin motors :D, enjoy

i tried earlier this morning to get more snow coverage, but the plane crashed, due to the weight. That camera is heavy. had to readjust my CG and rebuild the nose, again, for the 1,000,000 th time. :) then it flew perfect again.

I've been crashing that plane for over 5 yrs and its still flying, lol... I think its already worse than Keith Richards, more like chunk from goonies...

Techdriver, my new Skywalker isn't built yet so I can't really bring it. It is in parts all over the basement. :) I can maybe bring my heli to show you. Too bad I don't have a small one or I could give a demo flight.

Mixer, cool video. I really like the GoPros.

Hopefully I will get all my parts soon for the skywalker. I saw where my motor, esc, and servos finally left Hong Kong yesterday. I also got a message from the guy who makes the Dragon Links and he had made mine but forgot to send it and he is sending it right away. It seems like since I started all this most of my time has been waiting for stuff.

BTW, meant to post this last night... completely forgot it...

I think the 700E is required. :D You bring that, and I'll bring my mSR... we'll race!

I have been looking at transmitters and trying to figure out if the DX6i will be all I need. What do you guys use?

I have a Futaba 8USuper with a Spektrum 2.4Ghz module, Zach has a Futaba 7C, and Mike uses a DX8.

If I were you, I'd probably save the extra $100 up and get the DX7. It has another channel, more model memory, and more details discussed here: http://www.hooked-on-rc-airplanes.com/spektrum-dx7.html Or you could buy one used. That would work, too. :)

Oh am I not worthy with my 72mhz Hitec Eclipse 7 :(

they are really cheap now and you can convert it to 2.4ghz with a module for under $70 and still use 72mhz too.

I have no need for 2.4ghz so for me 72mhz is fine, and very cheap. just an FYI if your looking for a good radio for cheap. ;)

This is a neat thread. I worked in my godfather's hobby shop and kit business (Hangar One Hobbies) for a long time. We used to cut giant scale kits based on Ziroli plans with Nick's blessings and royalty fees :p I didn't do much RC except playing with some trainers and gliders. I mainly flew and competed in free flight stuff which most of the RC guys looked down on until they'd see me hook a wakefield (F1B) or coupe (F1G) into a thermal. Sadly stick and tissue is dead and replaced with aluminum/kevlar D boxes ordered from the Ukraine or China. Ah well, can't stop progress or whatever they call it.

Mike and Brandon, it was nice meeting you guys. I'll have to come back to see Mike fly that monster heli. Man that thing is big. Thanks for letting me take the mSR for a spin, Brandon. I will definitely have to get one of those. That was fun. I didn't think it would fly outside with the wind blowing, but it didn't do bad at all. After checking out those nice transmitters you both brought, I think I may end up getting the DX7.

Nah, Hitec isn't worth mentioning.

:p :D

Actually, I couldn't remember. :D

Finally got to fly for a while today. Flew for a couple hours in Columbia, tried out the GoPro - I was pretty pleased with the results, although the video is a bit blurry due to the dang oil from the exhaust. I'm rigging up an exhaust deflector for the Stick, so I don't have the issue anymore.

Thought I would throw my 2 cents in on the radio talk above .. I am really happy with my Futaba 2.4. I don't think I would buy a Spectrum radio; although they're fine radios, I'm just partial to Futaba. :D I've seen too many people talk about radio hits to chance it. Most experiencing the issue are probably dumb or don't use a 6v pack, but .. the only thing I would do over is get a higher end Futaba :)

Anyone know someone who needs a bunch of NIMH battery packs? I have a slew of 6v packs 2000mah and above I am going to get rid of. I'm using all LiFe packs now and won't go back.

You should put those packs as a group on RU or RCG. You could get some money to help with something... say a new phone? :D
