OT - RC Airplanes

I agree. Looks pretty cold and windy. Hopefully next weekend will be nice. I have a FY20 on the way to stabilize the plane a little more. I have the autopilot where it will work well if it isn't too windy but if it is windy it wants to roll over when it turns into the wind.

I also ordered a barometric sensor to sense the altitude. The GPS is way off as you know. I was flying here a few days ago zipping between the trees and it said I was 300ft. high. One guy told me he uses the barometric sensor and that when he lands he is within 5' of where he took off so that is pretty good. I am just afraid with the GPS I might have the autopilot set at 300ft. or something and it fly it into the trees. Not a big problem if I am watching the screen but if I loose signal or something that could be bad.

Well, if I don't know where the trees are that could be a problem. It should just fly back to me instead.

I have it where it will come back in reasonably calm air but if I am flying in high winds I can try to turn upwind sometimes it just keeps on turning until it is almost into a spin. I think what is happening is that it has no way to know if it is right side up or not, only the position of the plane. It also doesn't know which way is forward if the wind is blowing it sideways or even backwards. It registers forward as whatever direction the plane is moving. I am hoping that the FY20A will keep it right side up no matter what the OSD tells it to do. I could also get a magnetic compass but they are another $100. :(

I put the FY20 on it and it looks like it is going to help a lot in the wind. Moving the airplane around the ailerons, elevator, and rudder correct every move.

I also got a barometric altitude sensor and with ground testing it jumps around a little but only about 5 feet or so. Much better than 300ft. Hopefully Sunday will good for some flight testing.

I flew my plane a couple of times today in my back yard. I put on the FY-20A and I was able to do one of those cool crosswind landings. It was super stable even in the wind. On the second flight I went out almost a mile. It was the farthest I had went here. I noticed my diversity controller was switching back and forth which means my video signal was fading so I lifted up my goggles and turned the antenna toward the plane direction. When I put the goggles back on I had only static! I flipped it into return to home and started trying to figure out what happened. I was wiggling wires and unplugging and plugging things back in. While messing with it I heard the sound of the motor overhead. I looked up and the plane was right above me! After I landed I found that the power plug for the transmitter that transmits the signal to my goggles had come unplugged.

I might head out tomorrow to the field if it isn't raining. Hopefully the weather will be okay.

Wow! At least you know return to home works well! I would bet that you were having some flashbacks, though. ;)

Had a great day flying yesterday. I flew 3 flights with my FPV plane. The first one I was just adjusting things mostly. The second one I flew over Chickasaw Trace park. I could see the airfield below and some cars sitting there. It would have been funny if I had landed there. :) On the third flight I was about a mile out and almost 3000 ft. high when my motor made a funny noise and quit! I just turned it back towards home and it made it all the way back with a lot of altitude to spare. After I got it home I took it apart and saw that one of the windings was burnt up. I guess that is what I get for buying an $18 motor.

Awesome, Mike! Good that you got the plane back.

Wish I had felt up to flying this weekend, I am still recovering from some sort of bug:(

Is Chickasaw Trace park an RC field? You totally should have landed there. In fact, I would love to set something up where one of us go to the actual park and record the reactions of people when you land... That could be awesome.

It would be cool but I really don't know any of the people that fly there and some uptight people might get upset over it. Also, I probably would have lost video signal when I got close to the ground because of the trees and hills and such. It would have been very funny though. Here is a video.

BTW, you can hear the motor making some funny noises occasionally. I got most of the wind noise out by putting a small piece of electrical tape over the microphone on the GoPro.

That makes sense.

As an alternative, we should do it at Columbia or Smyrna. You could get just close enough to find the field and land and take off while either Zach or myself record reactions. :D It would be a lot better at one of those since you would know everyone. :)
