I'm considering a new smartphone. These are what I'm considering.

MOTOROLA DROID X
HTC DROID INCREDIBLE
MOTOROLA DROID 2
Samsung Fascinate
Apple iPhone

Comments and recommendations please.

I like my iPhone, I've played with the older droids and wasn't too impressed.. All of them will do what you need. Just play with them to find out which operating system YOU like best.

I love my Incredible.

Personally, I tend to be an open-source, open market kind of guy, so I was naturally attracted to the Android platform.

I have downloaded tons of awesome apps (everything from beer brewing software to games to a guitar tuner to the US Army survival guide) and haven't paid a cent for any of them.

I will be "rooting" my phone soon, which opens up a whole other world of possibilities for this phone.

The iPhone is a great piece of hardware. If you're more into tinkering and tweaking your phone, the Android platform gives you more opportunities to do so.

I'm gonna stick with recommending the iphone til the android platform (and more importantly hardware) gets a bit better. I'm a big linux guy and love open source, but apple's got this one right.

As far as android is concerned, I think it's about 1/3 the OS's fault and 2/3 the hardware it's on. I'd love to see android on the iphones hardware.

I'm a bit of a tech geek and hack everything I buy, phones, game systems, reef equipment, etc. I am definitely intrigued by the open source nature of the android OS. I've also heard many good things about the iphone though it lacks the same opportunities for hacking. Unfortunately I don't know anyone with either so I haven't had a good chance to play with any of them. Decisions decisions. :fun4:

I have a rooted droid x I love it. I have played with an iphone I just don't like the fact that apple limits the there market. Android promotes making apps and putting them on there market. But thats my opinion.

I have the droid 2 it works well I mean its a phone. I used to be on spring and had the samsung epic. Basically the facinate with a keyboard and although sprint service wasn't good the phone was much better then the droid. Although the droid. Seems more sturdy

Get one of the android os phones. Android is freedom to do what you want with your phone. Its a quality os and highly customizable. IPhone is all restricted in development by apple, last I read they didn't even allow you to have flash on YOUR phone.

Droid Incredible, soon to be HTC thunderbolt which will be able to do talk and data simultaneously over 4G... My GF has an iPhone and I continuously challenge her to show me one thing her phone does that mine cannot do better. A challege she has yet to win.

I don't think it is that cut and dry really. Motorola is just as interested in securing their firmware as apple is (jailbreaking arms race). On the other hand apple restricts what can go on the apple store. To date the only time I have ever felt the urge to jailbreak was for tethering on the iPhone 3G. Since getting the iPhone 4 I really don't care about tethering. The device itself is good enough.

As far as flash goes good!! I wish more platforms stopped supporting it so it would go away!! I do agree though that is should at least be an option for those that want it.

I have played with my friend's android phones before and they are nice enough I guess but they definitely lack the polish of the iPhones both in product design and OS.

iPhones on AT&T have had talk & data at the same time since day one.

IMO, here's what it comes down to...

Both are double edged swords - with the iphone you get a rock solid device with rock solid development (both the os and the apps), but limited or no option to tweak/hack the phone. With android you get open source, so you can hack and tweak until your hearts content, but software (both apps and os) update constantly, there are several version of everything out there and there is FAR less quality control when it comes to development.

Since you like to hack/tweak, I think you'll be disappointed in the long run with the inability to play with the iphone. I have a droid x, and have a fair bit of experience with the incredible. The major difference is this - do you want a bigger screen, or a thinner/sleaker device? The software differences (motorola vs HTC) are easily made up for with a rooted device, so I wouldn't let things like sense UI sway your decision.

unfortunately, you can't use the talk part of that equation because of AT&Ts network. The day my siblings brought their iPhones to my parents, they spent the day standing at the end of the driveway looking for a signal.

When the iPhone came out, it was a revolutionary device and did things phones had never done.

The state of the art has passed by the iPhone. from phone quality, camera quality, customization, etc., there are a number of Android phones that outperform the iPhone now.

Of course this is all just my opinion.
