OT: Testing Home Circuit Break and Power Strip.

Any ideas?

What happen for those Circuit Breakers have been using for more than 30 years at homes but never popped? and those power strips are supposed to strip when some devices get shorted circuit?

I did the math for the circuit breaker using for my tank, it came up close to 20Amps, and very suprised me that the CB not poped yet, so scarry:confused: .

are you sure it's the same circuit? Try using your vacuum on that circuit with everything running-that should pop it. The strips are surge protectors only-they will pop only if there is a power spike...

Short circuit and overload are two different issues.

Most "power strips" are just extra outlets. If it isn't a surge protector, they are no protection at all. Surge protectors will divert excess power when there is an overload of voltage incoming, but they won't stop you from drawing too much power.

Surge protectors with an actual fuse will pop their fuse if there is excess current in either direction. Very few surge protectors anymore have these -- they are a lot more expensive.

But they are worth it! When a semi took out the power pole to our complex we took a huge surge before we lost power, and my power was right up front first in line. Every surge suppressor and backup battery in the house fried -- but my stereo, TV, DVD, aquarium pumps, appliances, etc. did NOT. I happily went out and bought new ones!

Will pop soon when you are not home. Btw, I just heard that Hugo's tank is crash while power outage in his area (more than 4 hours no power). All his fishes were dead, but not sure about his corals (I'm not sure it's true but the rumor is around in OC). If some one can confirm this incident, please let us know.

I have seen his tank in person. That sucks if its true. If all his fish died , i would imagine he lost some corals.

Yes, 100% sure because I am the one who installed the CB and ran all the wires.

To test the Circuit Breaker, I bought brand new one from Lowe's rated 20Amps for 4 bucks, made by GE and did some testings, the result is so suprise me, it is POPPED at 30Amps after 20 seconds, here is the testing:

;Test File C:\ELITE Files\Test Files\PopBreaker\UntilItPops.te
;Start 2006-07-25T11:51:58

Enter Amps =/20
Enter Connector #/1
Enter Increment by/2
Enter Max Time in Seconds by/30
*****Starting Breaker LoadValue = 20 Amps
--->Actual LoadValue = 20 Amps; Actual TripTime = 30.875 Sec
--->Actual LoadValue = 22.016 Amps; Actual TripTime = 30.875 Sec
--->Actual LoadValue = 24 Amps; Actual TripTime = 30.875 Sec
--->Actual LoadValue = 26.016 Amps; Actual TripTime = 30.875 Sec
--->Actual LoadValue = 28 Amps; Actual TripTime = 30.875 Sec
Actual TripTime = 20 Sec
Expected MinTripTime = 1 Sec
Expected MaxTripTime = 30 Sec
Actual LoadValue = 30.016 Amps
Breaker LoadValue = 20 Amps
Over Load = 150.08%

LOL, so much for telling this guy the difference between a power strip and surge protector. One thing I know for sure is that my breakers are all 20amps and they trip like crazy if I run the vaccum off the same curcuit my tank is on...even if the lights are not on.

Sure! I will turn your tank on crazy like you.

Man, you made me to test the surge protector. Believe or not, it was reset at 23amp, and the time it held before it was popped was 14 Seconds.
