Well, I went from zero cucumbers to several bushels in a week.

Got a bushel of yummy squash too. Of course the f'n deer ate the tops off all 140 tomato plants - dont get me started.

Of course I'm not ready with jars.

Any ideas where to find one or two gallon size wide mouth jars?

Thanks.

Wal Mart has the jars needed for packing pickles. I don't know if they have 1 gallon size, but I know they have the quart size. They are the BALL brand of mason jars. They also carry the seasoning mix to make the pickles with.

I had a similar problem 2 years ago. I planted a few packets of seeds for cucumbers thinking that only a few of them would grow..........they all grew!!!!! I wound up with a ridiculous amount of cucumbers. So..... I wound up making pickles from some of them. It wasn't very hard. The BALL brand of jars that they have in Wal Mart work great - they have the sealable lids that are needed for getting a good seal on the jar.

Ace Hardware has them too, or you can order them online. Course you'll already have the pickling lime :)

Keep in mind too that you'll have to boil the jars with the pickles in them with at least an inch of water above the jar, so for a gallon jar you'll need a mighty big pot. Might want to do a bunch of quart sized ones.

thanks for the responses, our first foray into pickling.

anyone with a bow that wants to harvest a few deer, let me know. :)
