Cousin of the 1300 gallon addiction: The Miami Kitchen Build

I remember when we had the first serious conversation about the tank, and your plan to go fish-only. I said that it was the least maintenance entry into the hobby, however I thought you'd last a month before going full reef...I think it literally lasted 48 hours, maybe??? That was before the first drop of water hitting the glass! LOL

Those frags are growing steadily and waiting patiently! Get that baby plumbed!!!

Finally getting started on the the plumbing and ran into a snag already.. The used hammerhead pump that was going to be installed Outside had the motor seized up from the previous user and just sitting around.

I was intentionally looking for this post because you were right. I haven't even started filling up the tank with water and i've already decided that i'm going to go into the whole coral side of things.

Have some frags waiting for me at my cousins 1000gl tank. haha..

so you called it.

Ha! I think I like the corals more than the fish sometimes lol

Finally running the plumbing. And ran into some pump issues. First the reeflo pump seized up and Instead of fixing it I bought another one. It look like it was in great condition but after plugging it to the system I find a massive leak in the seal. This is the aftermath...

It was suppose to be an easy fix but after several failed attempts of removing the impeller, as instructed in the reeflo guide, I had to take matters into my own hands...

Even after removing everything but the screw from the impeller, we couldn't take the thing off..

After hydrating and taking a quick five minute break to re-energize from the now miami summer heat.. We finally got the nut off and we celebrated...

Some of the plumbing.. Still needs some more work. Running a manifold to a sea swirl and 4 3/4" loc line returns.

Also planning to connect the UV sterilizer, slimmer, phosphate reactor and some additional outlets for future changes.

One of them will be used for the frag system.

adding FRP board around and a main drain for water changes and emergency overflow issues. also adding a floor drain to try and keep things simple and clean.

Hey, been following along throughout the build! The kitchen tank with fish room is on many people's bucket list I would bet!

I saw your recent pics, and looked back to the old ones. I'm slightly concerned with your stand. The one end looks supported by one 2x4 standing up and one on edge?
I saw the main frame. Looks strong, especially the front. Did you end up putting plywood on it or just styro? Will the span be OK for the weight at the back?
I would think your final weight would be around the 3000 lbs mark, maybe more with the stone inside. Any deflection over time would/could be disastrous.
Maybe you've got this all figured out already and you'll be fine with the load. Just an observation! Can't wait to see life in there.

Thanks for following!

Yeah, initially I was concerned with the same things but the whole front end is 4 - 2x4s resting on the wall with studs at every 16". The back side is 2 - 2x4s together running across the whole backside of the and that is sitting on one side by horizontal 2x4 with tapcons to the wall and 2 vertical 2x4s that support the horizontal brace. The other side is kinda the same except a 4x4. After seeing the cabinets that this thing was sitting on before here I'm pretty sure I'll be good.
Legitimate concern though.

Also there are 2 center 4x4s underneath to hold the middle. I originally had a sheet of plywood but ended up removing it because it caused too many issues with the opening and not fitting properly by a 1/8". So now it's just styrofoam.

Which is going to allow us to create a pretty cool up light from under need the rocks in certain parts where I won't have sand.

To maximize space and also reduce noise and heat, decided to run pump and chiller outdoors. Will later on add a water reservoir for water changes.

Bean animal overflow.. Still need to tune the tank to run smoothly, which will be once all the accessories are plugged in.

isn't putting the chiller in an enclosed space going to cause problems for the chiller and how effective it is?
