understood and in use actually - running an acer aspire revo w/ ubuntu and XBMC and a logitech harmony one remote. It works great.
The idea here that Sony and microsoft seem to be missing (or hitting on but implementing haphazardly) is reducing the clutter of home theaters and all of the seperate components you need for a robust all-in-one device.
Think about everything in a home theatre: Blu Ray Player, CD player, HTPC for digitial video / mp3 playback, a gaming console / whatever you may use to stream netflix / Hulu/ etc.
Both now have a Blu Ray Player.
I think PS4 doesn't support CD playback anymore
PS4 doesn't have DLNA at the moment
XBOX 360 tried to implement m4v playback - but no surround sound.
