Other Aerobic acitivity in Substrate

Besides nitrification, what are some of the major aerobic activities in the substrate or filter medium of a reef or FOT? Do you think nitrification is the predominant oxygen comsumption in such?

Stagnation of water is not the same as anaerobic condition. There must also be consumption of the oxygen within.

In the substrate (above the anaerobic zone), you may have worms, bacteria, pods, nassarius snails, burrowing gobies, etc. They're all using respiration to generate energy. That's an aerobic process.
