Other snails...

I've got 3 Crocea's and 1 Maxima in my tank and for some reason the Crocea's have begun to pinch a little while the Maxima is fine. I was able to spot a couple pyramid snails and remove them, and continue to look for them but not finding any... I so see lots of snails not any more pyramids, just little round shelled snails... Could these be causing the iritation? Thoughts?

if there are small round shelled with tan stripes they most likely are harmless.

when are you checking for the pyrams?

The are the small round striped ones... I'm looking for pyramids when lights first come on, and just after lights out...

Will do, is there anything other than manual removal to try to irradicate them? FW Dips? Medication treatments? Bare Bottom Q Tanks?

the best way is manual removal.

1 or 2 hours ofter lights out remove the clam to a bowl of tank water and brush the whole shell(even if you dont see any) do this 3x a week for a month, then once a week for 2 months, then just check them from time to time

I sure hope it's the snails that are causing my pinching right now and not PM...

how long have you had the clams? and when did you add the last one?

Had 2 (Crocea and Maxima) for about a year (no issues in that year) and just added them to this tank, the other 2 (both Crocea) I just got from Barry.

They have all been in the tank for about 2 or 3 weeks...

I don't have any pics of just the clams, but I think you can see it here...

The two on the left are the two new additions.

Clams are not in any line of direct flow and the flow is random through a squirt... There are more details on my homepage. I've currently got carbon running in my sump but I'm going to rig up a carbon chamber to maximize carbon utilization and perform FW dips. Not sure what else I can try.

Well 5 min FW dips didn't do anything, but I still need to rig up a carbon reactor. Right now all the water should have to flow through the carbon in the sump but I'll try to rig up something better. I've moved the clams thinking maybe it was light issues or flow issues and still no change. Any other ideas what it could be? I'm also running Phosban, anything wrong with that?

have all the water comming from the phosban go through carbon also. after you have all your carbon in place give the clams a 20 min FWD

mbbuna, do you think these clams could be suffering from lighting deficincies?? My crocea is doing the same thing, although I run 4x150 w HQI's. During the day the mantle is extended, albeit upward(like the one on the left), toward the light...when 2 150's shut off, the mantle retracts(like the clam in the middle of the pic). I moved the clam to the top of the tank and get a little better extension than when it was midway...

I'm running phoenix bulbs and have been suspicious of these bulbs. They are about 7 months old . I know calvin runs phoenix as well...

im sure they would like more light.

what im seeing is the way there holding there mantles/curling of the mantle, and the retracting of it.

clams tend to hyper-extend with lack of light.

can you post a pic?
