Our 450g reef, 360g predator tanks

Thats the reason we were really leaning towards glass. And regular glass at that too. We're concerned about the appearence between the two. We want them both to appear crappy I guess. :lol:

I honestly don't think it looks crappy, the 450 that is. But I wouldn't want it to be obvious by having an ultra clear tank sitting next to it either.

And yeah Booze, where is the recommendation for an ELOS tank? (just kidding... :) )
 
Regular glass looks just fine. Used it for years. I went low iron this time on my front pane. Waist of money imo. Next time i am going acrylic. Starphire is not all that great anyhow Terry. It's softer and scratches easier. Thats what happens when you take the iron out of your diet. No muscles ;)
 
Thanks for the input, Frankie. I don't know that I've actually seen, in person, a starphire tank. I was wondering if it was worth the money, and it does add quite a bit to the price of the tank.

Scratching is the reason we're shying away from acrylic. Especially with predators in the tank. These guys get big. I wouldn't put it past them to scratch acrylic.

Let me guess, spitefull is actually a large, furry animal that has been sighted living in the wilderness of beautiful Canada. :lol:

Jonathan, I would love to see two tanks, one regular and the other starphire, sitting side by side. Patti and I were looking at the tank with the lights on tonight and there really isn't a greenish tint visisble. At all. But I don't know if the blueness of the Solaris compensates for that?
 
Howdy Barb!

UPS tried to deliver it today, we even called them to make sure there wasn't a signature required. They left a note and said there is a $38 COD charge that needs to be collected. Must have something to do with a customs charge, I don't know.

Anyway, we changed the delivery address to my work so I'll get it tomorrow. :D
 
Go to a local glass shop and look at the samples. There is a big difference in appearance. You just won't know it if your surrounded by one or the other. ;)

So, Terry, these diatoms... they are a rusty brown color? That cover your rock and glass and whatever they feel like?
 
Yep! And they're concentrated under the light. It's just the normal cycle though until they consume the silicates in the sand. Good thing is, it looks like they might be passing because I'm starting to get some hair algae now. 2nd phase of new tank syndrome.

Another good thing about all this algae, my nitrates are 5... I think I'll throw a bunch of SPS in now...

Maybe this weekend, depending on the readings of course, I might go ahead and get some flow going through the sump and get the skimmer and fuge involved in cleaning the tank. Hopefully the maturity of the other 450 lbs of rock in my system will help the new 450 lbs mature a bit.

I know I have a TON of pods swarming in the 450 already. Patti and I were watching them and we could actually see their legs and everything so we know they are pods. We saw them land on the sand and burrow in.
 
I have diatoms now too then! They're mostly on the top rocks and the tops of the power heads.

Any good LFS should have both on hand to compare. The issue with regular glass is that it changes the colors of the corals.
 
Yeah, and I wouldn't notice at this time because I don't have any corals in the tank yet. But then again, my 120g reef is regular glass so I don't have any good comparisions.

We do have a larger LFS locally and they have an Achilles tang that I would love to add to the 450 eventually. Maybe we'll head down there on Saturday and put it on layaway and check out their tanks. I'd be surprised if they didn't have tanks of both kinds.

Jonathan, I've also been checking out the DIBS site. Really interesting reading material! Has anyone set up a tank to breed and raise silversides? That's what I'd love to be able to do. We'd prefer to feed our predators live food.

Good question for which I have no answer. I would think discussing it with a bait farming facility would turn up some info though. Interesting idea.
