Out of Africa (picture intensive)

Baldwin- thank you , i thought some might enjoy the story ;)

Elliot- thanks

v8fla- Well thank you for posting much appreciated!

bluerexy- thank you, it still is far from where i want it to be but getting there, nothing good happens fast in this hobby ;)

Sohal Tang Tim- thank you, the crosshatches are special and my French Angel well i would never buy a fish of that size but he was a tiny juvenile in fact the smallest fish i had when i purchased him all those years ago, he is like a puppy dog very tame- can be hand fed etc and very intelligent too!

On a positive note My Clown trigger started feeding again but i am being careful to make the food size small , so he doesnt have trouble digesting it and he seems to become impacted really easily.I dont know if fish get colic but does seem like it.

Kinlayan, I just loved going through all the posts in this thread. I was a joy to read the updates and the photos where just awesome. I would love to see your tank again as it is today.. This is my most favorite thread. Thank you for sharing your experiences and I have to say, I never met a hobbiest who had kept the same fish for over 15 years.

Kinlayan,

Just got done reading through your thread!!! What an amazing tank, selection of fish and your care for them is top notch. You will inspire people to do what you have done, most likely on a smaller scale though. I have a 210 gallon reef tank that I am battling hair algae with, it is on the decline, but still a battle. I will win this battle.. Keep up the good work..

Sailfish

gotmilkmailit- Thank you i am glad you enjoy reading the thread i hope to post many more interesting things over time , your compliment really encourages me to continue ;)

Sailfish-Thank you very much, this hobby is full of battles it is like being in charge of a game reserve .. an ecosystem is an ecosystem and in order to keep things in balance the way we want is a challenge. You will win the battle keep at it ;)

Managed to get a nice pic of my black tang hybrid , usually one cant see the lines on the body but the flash brought it out under normal light it appears matt black in colour

Time for an update, i was able to get a bandit angel (one of my alltime favourite angels but it did not survive in quarantine in spite of it eating well for the first 3 days it got sluggish and stopped feeding with no outside symptoms of disease except some wierd whitish growths which came out on one side of the lateral line(might have been an internal infection of I.hoferi that killed it but not sure). Very sad but this hobby has its Ups and Downs -this was a downer :(

At the same time i also managed to get another fish i have been very keen to keep for years when i got the bandit and that was a blue spotted jawfish - this is not at all a common fish in South Africa no one ever seems to bring them in and i think they are incredible and full of character.

After a month in quarantine he went into the middle section as he needed a sand bed after a week of building tunnels in about 5 different places he decided to settle on one right in front of the glass in one of the busiest sections of the tank, i added some more sand and coral chips so he could reinforce his burrow in this section and he seems fairly settled there but as you will soon see in the poor quality iphone videos it is a rough tumble neighbourhood ;)

The first video will give you a good indication of his umm size in relation to other fish and please note he is in an overhang so the lighting is poor and so not great video quality

<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="400" height="300" data="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"> <param name="flashvars" value="intl_lang=en-us&photo_secret=4f52b2eaeb&photo_id=5072675653"></param> <param name="movie" value="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377"></param> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000"></param> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377" bgcolor="#000000" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="intl_lang=en-us&photo_secret=4f52b2eaeb&photo_id=5072675653" height="300" width="400"></embed></object>

This next video is the eager beavers waiting to be fed in that section, as you can see a frenzy is building before any food touches the water they see the feeding glass and they know !

<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="400" height="300" data="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"> <param name="flashvars" value="intl_lang=en-us&photo_secret=8cf8cd6723&photo_id=5073313412"></param> <param name="movie" value="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377"></param> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000"></param> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377" bgcolor="#000000" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="intl_lang=en-us&photo_secret=8cf8cd6723&photo_id=5073313412" height="300" width="400"></embed></object>

And here is what the lil blue spot jawfish has to put up with , it isnt always this rough but this time alot of food ended up close to his entrance

<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="400" height="300" data="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"> <param name="flashvars" value="intl_lang=en-us&photo_secret=7ec63d90c3&photo_id=5073393386"></param> <param name="movie" value="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377"></param> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000"></param> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377" bgcolor="#000000" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="intl_lang=en-us&photo_secret=7ec63d90c3&photo_id=5073393386" height="300" width="400"></embed></object>

The aquarium has a good quantity of live mysis (they spawn all over especially in the protected coral sections )and i have seen him eating the cleaner and peppermint shrimp spawnings as well, he could have chosen a more peaceful area of the aquarium but he wants 360 degree view of everything it seems- Gotta love fish with character and who doesnt love that face! hope you all enjoy sorry about the poor quality video but i will make a better hd video of the whole aquarium soon.

On the equipment side a friend upgraded his skimmer on his Fowlr to a Giga Atb cone(incredible skimmer) and i got his old Atb xtra large cone(also incredible it skims well even in hyposalinity) which i plan to install soon for some additonal skimming power in the aquarium

thanks for the update, that big french angel next to the blue spot is crazy, he could get in there and clean his teeth! lol he's not afraid of anything, reminds me of a small dog barking at another 10 times his size

fish look fat and healthy, as usual, what a great setup

Elliot- Thank you, yeah the size difference is enormous but i can tell you that little fish has some much character it is incredible truly a beautiful fish

size of your fishes always makes me shiver...very few people can maintain such a huge stock so healthy...specially privately...kudos to you...
p.s:i wonder how that jawfish managed to manke that burrow(or was it done for him) and more interestingly how many times that burrow get covered due to so much fish activity near him...

Hi Auem, thank you for your compliments

The jawfish when first introduced made 4 burrows around the aquarium(if he made them at the back i would never see him) but at night i found he moved from one to another when he finally made the one near the glass , he stayed there so i did give him some extra sand and coral chips to increase the depth and bring him up to a better viewing height at the glass- he took the materials and made his burrow deeper and more sturdy but he does have to do constant repair work on it especially at feeding time ;)

Amazing fish! Cape town is beautiful, I lived in Durban for 2 years but only made it over there once, it was awesome. Great job on the tank!

Kellerexpress , yes Cape Town is really beautiful but Durban has the warm tropical water ;)

thank you for your compliment!

Update, i was able to get a new fish one of my favourite's but a difficult prospect as i have no experience with them and i hear they dont adapt very well to captivity- i am hopeful i can make an exception here, my first try at one was not successful it perished after 9 days in Quarantine.

Introducing the Bandit angelfish Apolemichthys arcuatus - an incredible fish in colour and personality ( they truly are magnificent Angelfish and i have seen many angelfish)

Here is a pic of my favourite new fish

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/42085951@N06/5140398345/" title="BANDIT 037 by Kinlayan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4049/5140398345_74bd53f5c3.jpg" width="500" height="332" alt="BANDIT 037" /></a>

this fish is unlike other Angelfish i have seen in that on it's scales it has white spines they feel like lil porcupine puffer spines - it is not wise to catch it in a net as they are bound to get hooked, i always used a beaker when moving it, it inhabits deeper water and eats primarily sponges mine came in eating mysis and brine shrimp but didnt want to eat anything else i trained it in quarantine to eat pellets when i mixed the pellets in the juice of brine and mysis- It also liked tetra's new gel food blocks and has a healthy appetite

For some reason the blue-spotted jawfish pics and video is not showing up for me, anybody else having this problem?

Is there a link I could go to?

That angel is gorgeous!

thanks.

yes i am very fond of the bandit angelfish, just hope i can keep it as long as i have kept my others for, i realise they are rated as a 2 by Scott W. Michael a 1 being the most difficult and unsuitable fish for captivity.

Thanks for the links, they work great.

That little blue-spotted jawfish is really a cool find. I love the way they are always popping in and out of their burrow. Convenient that he put his burrow right up agains the glass!

Yes, hopefully the angel will do well, if you've done well with them before hopefully this one will be the same.

I have video i was able to capture it is on an iphone , so not good quality though but it is all i had on me at the moment , you get to see most of my fish minus the secretive ones like gobies, golden pygmy angel and mandarin- but more important you get to see my crosshatch triggers doing their spawning dance ,i added some cool music so at least that and the fish will make up for poor quality ;)
