Outdoor Sump

Any thoughts on an outdoor sump would be much appreciated. I was thinking about building a sump shed on the outside wall of my house. I have built my sump and insulated it as shown in pictures. There is still more insulating to do but this is a start. Bare in mind I live in UK, is this a good idea or doomed to failure?

Here are couple of things I would consider if I was in your situation now. The foam you have around the sump seems like a soft foam. what is the R value of that? Also, if moisture gets into soft foam then its conductivity will increase and R value will decrease. Have you considered polyiso foam boards? they are much stiffer and doesn't get affected by moisture that much.

or you can do this......... put a wooden skin and seal it, by that way moisture may not come in contact with the insulation material.

In this summer how are you planning on controlling the heat? consider building a shed box over this and you will have a good chance after that....

temperature fluctuations are a pain, but could be reduced if well planned

I've seen it done. As long as you can control temps you will be fine. Make the sump house big enough to hold a chiller of adequate size in case you need one (doubt it).

Make sure you have a high quality heater controller.

I would make a small greenhouse for it. With proper ventilation controls, a greenhouse should be able to maintain the right conditions, even in the UK. You'll need it to survive rain, snow, storms, as well as insects, birds, animal waste, etc...

Do some research on DIY greenhouses.

I've seen a few outdoor sumps here on RC - mainly in California. Agree that temperature management (less so for UK than CA) and protection from contaminants will be the main challenges.

I know it is because I built an outside tank in TX!

The amount of waste, weather, and water to deal with is insane. I eventually noticed that the only other neighbor who was successfully growing anything outside had a greenhouse that stood up to an ice storm in January!

Greenhouses are an exceptionally good idea, unless you live in Hawaii or so.
