So I just got my sicce 2.0, it seems like a tight fit. Is this the one you guys use or is it the 1.5 ?

2.0 is correct. It fits. Make sure you are trying to install it by removing the current output elbows and tubing, connect the tubing to the pump, then lower the whole assembly down to the bottom, then reconnect the output elbows.

Reduck, I think you said at one point you used the Eheim compact 2000 pump as well. Do you recall anything special yu did to get it in there? Did it require any special tubing or did it work with the stock returns? I'm finally going to tackle that project this weekend. Let me know.

basically the same as i mentioned for the SS pump. Remove elbows and old pump as an assembly. Drop the new pump to the bottom and fit the stock hose.
remove and clamp and drop back in and attach the elbows.
its a very tight fit but it does fit.

hi Fusion 40 owners, I am considering getting one but I noticed the pump chamber in the middle has 2 dead spots to each side which really has no use..? I am wondering how hard it would be to remove detritus in that chamber in the future.

I know most people have water tight floss packed so nothing big flows into the rear, but I am skeptical about this especially if I don't want to pay for upgraded media baskets.. Does it seem like enough space to reach in with a suction hose in your hand to at least vacuum out this area?

Typically once a month I remove everything from the sump area during a WC and vacuum this area. I have found some very light debris but nothing crazy. Really nothing big should collect down there even with the stock media baskets. Worst I ever saw was some brown algae build up and it all came out with the syphon using just the hose end without the big tube.
A turkey baster is your best friend when cleaning these areas!

RO/DI unit for apartment

RO/DI unit for apartment

Just bought my IM 40 after seeing this thread and how amazing everyones tanks look. I've read my way up to page 50 so far and there is tons of great info. I'm in the process of gathering all the necessary equipment and had a question about RO/DI units:

I live in an apartment but would still like to consider purchasing a RO/DI unit. I've found one that is portable but would like a second opinion, as I don't know what to look for when it comes to these units. How does this look?

Like so many before, I have purchased an IM Fusion 40 . . .

My living room now has . . .

Innovative Marine Fusion 40G
Innovative Marine Upgraded High Gloss White Stand
Ecotech XR-15 LED Fixture
Ecotech RMS XR15 Tank Mount Kit
Maxspect Gyre FX-130
Innovative Marine Aqua Hydrofill ATO System
Reeflink (on the way)

The LFS delivered unto me and mine all of the above, along with many pounds of live rock and water (both re-homed from one of the store's tanks). After the initial testing, they also installed about ten hermit crabs and snails . . . They are named "Hermit Crab" and "Snail" (all of which are interchangeable and apply equally to each of their respective species). They are all settling in nicely.

Thus far, in my two days of experience, I am very happy with everything and pictures shall follow. So, here I am to introduce myself (and Hermit Crab, Hermit Crab, Hermit Crab, Hermit Crab, Hermit Crab, Hermit Crab, Hermit Crab, Hermit Crab, Hermit Crab, Hermit Crab, & Snail, Snail, Snail, Snail, Snail, Snail, Snail, Snail, Snail, Snail).

Howdy!

I've used a unit like that. They are very very slow. For a little more $ you can grab a spectrapure refurb unit that will output a lot faster. It can be connected with sink attachment and put away after use. I did it for months, till I mounted it.
Good luck!

LOL! Welcome to our addiction! I'd still watch the tank for a bit of a cycle. If the rock stayed wet it may not be that bad. Make sure you test the water frequently and be prepared to react if you see an ammonia or nitrate spike due to some rock die off. Oh, and get a skimmer!
Good luck!

Reduck, missed that one on my list . . . Hermit Crab and Snail (x10 each) are being cared for by an IM Aqua Gadget Ghost Skimmer Midsize.

Rock stayed submerged entire time (they brought it in what looked like a portable tank). LFS (more of a boutique - it is an Elos Aquastudio in Short Hills, NJ - the kind of place you feel the need to get dressed up to go to, very clean and helpful staff and everything they have advised has mirrored what I have read on these hallowed "pages"). Because they did the install, they will test the water every 2-3 days in their store for free, with copies for me. We are in no rush for the cycle to end, but, liked the idea of having the tank set up by experts since this is our first saltwater tank. We want to do it correctly and responsibly the first time.

The brought the CUC for the tank after the tank passed the 24-hour test.

I believe that the following question is likely to result in the "sharknado" effect, but, hey, I live life dangerously . . .

Should we get an Apex-esque system for the tank? The LF"B" suggested holding off, but, like an albatross about my neck, the question nags at me . . .

Absolutely agree. I can personally attest. I haven't personally used the countertop model but did start out trying to use an undersink Watts Premier RO filter with the incredibly easy-to-use push-button cartridges. Excellent, excellent filter for drinking water. But it was slow - even with a permeate pump. Ended up being WAY too slow to keep up with making ATO and water change water.

I ended up getting the Air, Water, and Ice Typhoon 3. And like Reduck mentioned, there is a great screw-on faucet supply line attachment that will work with the RODI system of your choice. The Typhoon is making water so fast that I had a nice little puddle on the floor while I was making ATO water this evening. Still getting used to the dramatic increase in production.

SpectraPure is supposed to make some really excellent gear. My wife and I recently did a behind-the-scenes tour at Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies (fairly close to home for us, nice day trip) and I noticed a SpectraPure RODI filter in their on-site analytical lab.

Tank is looking great. I really think you'll like it. And it sounds like you're fortunate to have good local support.

Apex? I'll have to give you what's becoming my "canned" answer. Is it necessary? Absolutely not. Lots of well-functioning tanks out there with no controller. But if you're the least bit "techy" and can make the funding of the system work for your budget, I'm positive that you'll be pleased and find ways to make your tank and its critters healthier and happier because of it.

Reduck and I, along with others, have really talked about the Apex being more than a fun gadget. It gives us peace of mind that things will be okay while we're away from home. My work schedule is normally fairly predictable. But there are the after-hours meetings that pop up, usually two or three nights a month I have to travel, and generally one or two full weeks out of the year that I go to conferences. Our oldest daughter is at the age where her soccer team is starting to amp it up and get into more serious practices and scrimmages. Add in a couple of boards that I serve on that meet monthly or quarterly and the days get full. So it's nice to know that the lights will still come on and go off as they're supposed to, regardless of how hectic the days are. Reduck's convinced me to get the AFS feeder and I've already got the programming ready for that. Will be really nice if we decide to take an extended day trip and end up not getting home until later in the evening when the lights are already off. The "safety" parameters that can be configured for ATO (especially when dosing kalk in the ATO water) are really excellent. Thankfully I've never seen any of the pH or temperature triggers in my programming tripped. But I feel sure that sooner or later it will happen and I will be awfully glad I invested in the Apex when they do.

I've been impressed with Neptune's development of the hardware and software, having seen some very useable enhancements made in just the short time I've had my tank running. It's an active community of users with a great product.

And on the cost side, let's face it... there's nothing about this hobby that is really on the inexpensive side of things. For all that the Apex does, and for the quality of the product, I do believe the pricing is fair. And like Reduck has mentioned, they do appear in the classifieds.

I'm sure you can have a successful tank without an Apex, but I can tell you with certainty that it's my favorite piece of equipment in my system and I personally can't imagine having a tank without an Apex now. Plus, it's totally scalable. Get the full version and it will work just as well with a 400 gallon tank with 100 gallon sump just as well as it does with our 40 gallon AIOs.
