Painting??

when I painted the basement where the sump is my skimmer just overflowed bubbles for 3-4 days. don't think it did anything to the tank though, as everything seemed normal.

There are multiple anecdotal reports in hobbyist literature about increased skimmer activity and also some blaming paint fumes for aquatic organisms dying.
I have read some articles that suggest that the increase in skimmer activity is due to increased mucous from fish / inverts, although I might guess that chemical changesto water killing bacteria and protozooans might be another cause for skimmer wildness
But my BS theory has just about as little data to support it as everyone elses

Stan... You have enough posts to sell things now! LOL ... only took you 5 yrs :)

Sorry for the threadjacking.

Well, I guess this means all the other guys & gals using this forum are gonna be OUT OF BUSINESS.

Give me 5 more years and I'll be the guy who takes this web site into a federal bailout while I walk away with just a golden parachute worth over $100 million Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha

keep the place ventilated ,fans ,open doors, extra carbon charcol alkid paint is a no no.There are enviromentally friendly paints now that I would suggest."Harmony "paint is good and odorless.I'm thinking about painting my basement also, but I will wait till late spring to do it ,so I can get lots of circulation.I have a 220gal + 100gal fuge.I think I would commit suicide if something would die,or better yet if everything would die.

Hi,

I recently painted all around my 75 gal. reef tank plus the room where the tank sits and did not notice any problems & my skimmer did not seem to go wako. I did not take any precautions about extra ventilation or fans, ect. I used standard latex paint.
Stan, glad to see you active on the Csea forum.........

You can buy no-VOC latex paint at Home Depot or Lowes. this is one step better than low-VOC paint that still has some odor/fumes. It was about $35 a gallon last time I checked, the same as the high end regular paints so it is not out of reach and this time of year good ventilation in a house is hard to come by.
