i'm reshuffling my livestock.. probably remove the emperor juvie(aggressive) to add a pair of either the swallowtail or watanabei? the pair will probably be both females.

i've never seen a watanabei in person. anyone with experience with them?
are they easy to feed/maintain?

i'm leaning towards getting the watanabei's.

Lots of good reading here on this thrd For the love of genicanthus

Out of bellus, watanabe and swallowtail I found the swallowtail to be the most aggressive. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, I find bellus females & watanabe to be beautiful. They are not difficult to wean into prepared food and good water para and lower temp would be a good start.

we have a trio of swallowtails at work, 2f 1 m, they are beautiful fish and i havent seen them behave aggressively either, we also have a pair of watanabei's i dont think they are for sale but we can get them pretty often, they also are gorgeous fish no aggression ever that ive seen with them, they all came in eating like champs and i personally like the watanabei pair better, but the trio of swallowtails looks awesome, we also have a small pair of swallowtails too

watanabe

watanabe

I have had a watanabe female in the past, lost her to swim bladder issues. I think they are more delicate than bellus angels, especially the males. I have a tiny trio of bellus in a 90 DT that will be tranferred to my 155 FOWLR in a few months. I am hoping one of the bellus will change to a male once they get larger.

I have 15 genicanthus angels in our large reef tank. Out of 5 species, the watanabei is the most aggressive. I would not recommend putting 2 females together, and if you can't get a male/female pair at the same time, you probably won't be able to add a male later. I very rarely see males in the trade, FWIW. Also, male G. melanospilos have a history of reverting back to female in captivity.

I have a F Bellus and a F Swallowtail and they are both great fish. They really just do their own thing and ignore other fish. As for the pairs it seems to me I have seen many stories about the sexes changing back and forth so you may want to do some research on that.

We have had our mated pair of Bellus Angels for over a year and we are very happy with them.

Here's a couple of pics:

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I am looking at adding a pair of Bellus Angels to our 150G mixed reef and wanted to see how yours are doing.. They are absolutely beautiful!

Check out their build thread, she just posted some pics of the Male last week. Im sure she'll post them here as well.

Female swallow tails look like big damsels to me but, the males are amazingly beautiful. if it were me I would go with swallow tails only because of the male lol!!

Here is my Watanabe Angels with the T. gigas in my tank

They are easy to care for, only eat from the water column and not bother any other anima. They eat everything, very graceful and beautiful. I wish I spen the time to take better picture of them.

beautiful pair of bellus
+1 on the bellus imo
If you are looking for a pair of swallowtails, there are also masked swallowtails which are more difficult to come by but are pretty cool looking as well.

Watanabe is a nice pair, as well as Bellus...

I have had multiple Genicanthus angels together in my 450g DT... a Lamarck and pairs of Swallowtail and Bellus... The first problem was the lone F Lamarck that turned M and grew so fast in a few months, that it made my M Bellus and Zebra revert back to F!... Since I really liked the Zebra, I removed the Lamarck...unfortunately the (F to M to F) Bellus changed to M again, so last May I got rid of it, and the Zebra finally reverted back to M. It gets more colorful each week.

I now have a trio of Swallowtails, a F Masked, 2 sm F Watanabe and a F Bellus, as well as a pr of Flames, a Coral Beauty, a pr of Multifaciatus and a Regal that I hope to pr up with a RS Regal.
