Since I started this thread thought I should finally post some pics of my Diamond Tail. The Diamond Tail is still boss of the tank. My McCoskers passed after being bullied by the Diamond Tail for a month or two. The Diamond doesn't seem to have a problem with the full male Carpenters. Diamond pretty much ignores my Lubbocks, Lineatus and Hooded Fairy wrasses. Anyway, finally took some pics. Last pic shows that he tore his dorsal sometime between last night and tonight. Hope that heals quickly.

How long have you had yours? I ask as mine turned a very deep red after a couple of months. I know at least one other member's did as well. Yours looks like mine did when I first got it.

I got him June 2013 from NYA. I think several of us got our fish from the same batch. Mine is also a very dark red. It has grown and gotten darker since I got him. I think the flash from the camera makes it appear a bit brighter than it really is. When not flashing it certainly is darker, almost black in some areas similar to the pic in your posts.

OK, that makes sense. Mine is developing black on its caudal and dorsal fins. I'll have to grab a picture soon.

Here you go, notice the black on the dorsal fin, very tip of the caudal fin, and by the pectoral. Marks are from squabbles with other Wrasses:

Here's mine without the camera flash. Not as dark as yours but for sure with the dark almost black coloration. Must be a matter of age. Does anyone know if this happens to other flashers?

It's a pretty unique phenomena with this species. The speculation is it's a response to UV levels higher than it encounters in the wild.

Hunter, are you saying, that once these fish go black...they're not going back?


On a serious note...I've had the same thing happen with my Naokoae wrasse...top of wrasse lost red color, turned black

Wow! Does it happen to all of these? Mine looks nothing like those two, of course he's very small and I've only had him about 3 months (in DT for 8 days). Mine is a brilliant red, much brighter than my McCoskers with the electric/neon blue stripes.

Almost like a sun tan, LOL. Probably not melanin though!

I got a diamond tail flasher from NYA today.... Couldn't believe he's eating larry's fish frenzy
5 min after I added him into QT. He came in a huge bag of water and I couldn't be happier. Thanks to Michael from Nyaquatics.

Gonna do 6 weeks of hypo and prazi after.

I picked up this little guy from Michael (NYA). This guy looks phenomenal, and he is definitely not shy. He swims with the big boys.
I have been very happy with the quality of fish from NYA.
