Partially submerged/emerged LR?

Does anyone have any experience with this?
I found the perfect rock for my tank, but it's a bit too tall. I'd rather not have to break the rock - is there anything wrong with just leaving about an inch and a 1/2 sticking out? It actually looks pretty cool right now, but you won't be able to see the emerging part when the hood is finished.
Thanks!

i would think your fine, its actually been a goal of mine to have some rock break that "plane" of the canvas , i always thought itd make for a different aquascape.

Id personally leave it

Thanks Brandon - I remember seeing a thread once in which the poster had a "volcano" inspired tank with a huge rock emerging. I couldn't find it again and was wondering if had to do anything special.

DO IT! Something I've always wanted to do in a marine tank. :) Nothing "wrong" or bad about it. You could even get creative and plant mangroves at the top, or some other emergent marine plant/algae. I had emergent driftwood and plants in my last planted FW tank, it was one of my favorite features of that tank.

reefboarder had a rock doing that for a while. I don't think he saw any problems with it or anything. Maybe he will chime in.

Well - I'll just leave it and see then!
Unfortunately, it's not going to be cool in an artistic sense, since the peak of the rock will be covered by the hood...... but I'll find out if there's any problem with it :)

That sounds like a neat idea. I’m doing a 40B build in the spring. I’ll have to check back with ya to see how you make out and incorporate it in.

I never experienced any problems with the rock partially out of the water. I have an open top tank and it looked really cool and occasionally snails hang out there. I read thru that volcano thread months ago and remember that person saying that hermits also would hang up there periodically. I think that would be neat to watch hermits doing their thing out of the water.

the volcano tank is amazing! not quite the same thing, but same idea, i have alot (an obscene amount, actually) of LR in my basement sump...and there are portions where it is sticking out. I've got the sump lit on a timer with t5's (geisman, actinic/white), and the life in the sump is kinda like a tidepool...with hermits, assorted starfish, snails. Pretty cool. I LOVE THIS IDEA, LIZZ!
