Pay it forward and get hosed ... a response.

It's Dr. Goodluck Himself
Over the last year I have given away many frags, most of those quite large, even colony-sized. I have in recent days seen recipients selling frags of those same corals, in one case $35 for a 1" piece.

I'm sorry, but this is just wrong. Others told me that they maintain a "don't conduct future transactions" list for such situations. I hate to do this, but I have started my own version of this.

I agree, that's just wrong!

That thread was never intended for the purpose of making money on other peoples good will. Any one that that is known to have done this should be black listed pubicly.

I don't even really have the words (that I can use here) to describe how sickened I am by this type of behavior.

Joel, you are a kind and giving person and I think that we all should bring back public stoning for any one who would take advantage of you or what that the purpose of "pay it forward" is intended.

I agree 100%. I have some free xenia, for anyone who is interested. All are multi branching!

I couldn't agree more with all of you, it is just plain wrong.

Its a shame what some people will do for a buck
I usally tell people that if I give it to you you need to give it away from there on out
does'nt mean it happens but if I see some one selling something I gave them I would call them out on it publically probally on there FS post

I have had the same thing happen to me. Not only that, there are some people that agree to something then never show up. I had someone show up to my house and almost demand every free coral I had (the bam bam oranges). I had a short list of some people that got erased when I rebuilt my operating system on my computer. Joel, can you give the name or pm with it also?

I have a feeling i know who did this i even asked him if he got it for free he said "no this is a diffrent peice" needless to say i passed on it i wont list names till ostrow comes out and says it.

Unfortunately I stopped entering that thread due to the number of "can I get whatever you are giving away" posts from people that merely appear as if they are attempting to stock their tanks for free.

Todd, I don't have a problem with people stocking their tanks with coral giveaways. 90% of the corals in my tank were generous giveaways particularly from true old-timers on this forum. I used to sell frags of what I had personally bought for $5 apiece.

But I stopped doing that when it was clear that giving was the proper route -- giving back to CMAS members in return for all we get, particularly after tank crashes and such, from those same CMAS members.

There always have been and always will be some who exploit this generosity, particularly in a big-city environment such as ours. It is sad.

I prefer to keep my own list, and not to name names. They know who they are, and now know not to come calling on me if they experience a tank crash. I believe that is sufficient.

I guess I should have clarified a bit on that Joel. I don't mind helping out those that have been part of the community for a while or someone that suffered a crash. Heck I have finally reached the point that I could start cutting and profiting from my tank and I choose to leave it alone.

I have seen a lot of new comers that want to jump right into keeping corals when they lack the tank to do it. To me it comes across as a well so what if I get corals and they die, I got them for free anyway type of mentality.

U call me old timer....

Hey its not just the old timers!!! :P im very new to RC been in the hobby quite a while, but after 4 months of being here iv probly givin away $1k in tanks and corals. Some people are just honestly out to do a good deed while others just want to snatch up all the crap they can for free and make a profit off of it!

I knew a guy matches that discription....:lmao: :lol2: :lolspin:

I just don't get it either Joel.... :(
it is truely disheartening to hear such things and worse yet that it has happened to such a great guy like you....

people like that certainly make it difficult for others to keep up the "pay it forward" mentality...

Long whip, BIG america. Lie, cheat, steal. That is the way. Reefers are not immune to the situations.

Kudos to Kawicivic who gave me my 1st few frags(8ish) for free, about 1.5 years ago .I've yet to sell a drop of them. I grow and give to people who buy other frags, or stop by for free cheato.

Couldn't possibly count the # I gave away, way too many.

Just gave 100 polyp rock of 1 of his freebies to Rockford Reefers at Midwest Fragfest, and still have most of the 8 types around. The frag started as 2 polyps. They were to do what they desired with it, and I think it went too reefball?

Why worry or fret? How is this any different then any other giving situation in life? Alotta people take advantage of situations. At least they are not taking from the sea, in this case.

NO CRYING IN REEFING

Cheer up, the "giving" is all about the "GIVER". :D

I'll keep giving, no matter the situation, but I don't think people should be pointed out(takers). Some people just need to grow a bit =).
