percs and carpet pt.2

ok I wrote my earlier thread regarding the carpet anemone and false percs as sorta my intro into this anemones & clownfish forum, we figured out that its most likely a Haddoni. Anyway, I regret to write part 2 as a thread to remedy the problem I have ran into:

The Anemone seems to very ticked off within the past 3 days here. Intermittenly it will begin to deflate to around half its size and start gaping. Along with exposing some of its internals and refuse food. Then at random times when i check up on him it looks very expanded and healthy. I know these are very common symptoms to forsee death in the future, so here I ask for your guys;s help.

BACKROUND: Recently moved, the 1+ year old carpet was in a 55g system alone with a couple sps colonies. It thrived and was doing very well (tripled in size). I recently moved him into a 40g system (same tank water/rock/sand ect) again alone it seemed well for over a week+, even began to change to green.

I have a 90g system which is 90% done that the anemone would go into if it began to outgrow the 30"tank (which it eventually would) Now the tank seems to have a little nitrate bloom which hasnt been a real problem in the past. Ill test everything tomorrow and get those results.

Lastly I know pictures would help 200% but I still am yet to get my borrow camera back.

Please thx for the help in advanced.

ok quick update, today the anemone looks great. Fully expanded, showing its "crowns" , showing good color and the mouth is closed for the most part.

So I dont understand what the problem could be? why would this only happen at night? could it be a pH problem?

Without Params, pictures, lighting amount...it really is tough to hazard a guess to be honest. In your next post, please try to include all of these things, plus feeding habits, has it split..if so when...etc.

well before i can cover all of those things, I want to know if anyone has ever ran into a problem with this kind of pattern (looking great during the day and crap during the night)

btw after running some more carbon and doing a water change its seemed to supress the problem but not cure it.

Well, if I wasnt so obsessed i might not even noticed, but during the night ill randomly find it deflated and exposing internals. The fact that it lasted so long during the night is what got me alarmed. Never did this so frequently.

although during the past few it hasnt been as bad, just gaping mouth. and usually the surge is off at night and when id turn it on it reacted well to it..

I was feeding silversides and various seafood from the grocery store. I do not feed that often maybe once a week, I like to feed more periodicly with various planktons ect. during the week along with the coral.

my parameters stay pretty stable with the weekly water changes, nitrates have gone up about 15 in the past week since it started the symptoms so im improving that.

Its a shallow tank so Ive got a 150w 10k DE hamilton fixture about 10" directly above the anemone.

flow consists of dual mj1200's and return of about 500gph. plus the surge.

just the clowns are in there. (a small goby might have hitch hiked actually from the transition) But the only larger creature in there is an emerald crab, but i never see him near the nem.

bulbs were new about 5 months ago, im gonna actually clean the uv glass tonight, see if theres a big difference its pretty dirty

If your carpet is doing this at night, its probably just emitting waste. Does it do it every night or does it just randomly deflate like that. My H. Crispa sometimes randomly deflates during the night and shrinks to half its size. My H. Crispa is about 13 inches in diameter so its a big decrease. Nonetheless, its still a healthy anemone. Does it do this after a meal?

its been doing it at about the same time everyday (about an hour before the lights go out) then sometimes at night. It has not been doing it quite as bad since i wrote the thread, but its still worrying me. It has not eaten anything for about two weeks. Although i did run out of silversides so ill try that soon.

Zestay, they are about a 3 year old pair of false percs/ocellaris

get a blue powder tang.. feed it to the nem... kidding. but there have been stories and pix of a haddoni eatting a decent sized tang. mine ate my six line wrasse the other day.. guess its time to upgrade from. 1/2 a piece of a silverside to the whole thing

alittle bit of a update, late why not rite, night pictures. still doing the whole night thing, not as bad tho.
