we bought a percula clownfish (nemo) and the little sucker swam the first day in the middle of the tank. now he's like a cork, he stays at the very top of the tank. not just 1 or 2 inches below the surface, he's at the top. in the mornings he almost side ways at the surface, i guess thats how he sleeps. you can scare him and he'll swim down but then pops back up. he seems to be doing well, eating alittle food and not breathing heavy at all. is this normal?? all the water readings are good. thanks for any help.

A lot of clowns will swim near the surface of a tank...seems they feel comfortable up there, but I'm not sure why they do it. I've read about a lot of little clowns having a favorite corner of the tank to hang out it.

Somebody said something about a clown in a corner? yes it is mine ... did I mention they are 2?

I had one in my 36g and he was always in the left corner, we had a magnet there so it was his house.

We bought a 90 g, we moved everything from the 36g over the 90 and guess what .. the clown went for the left corner.
We keept the light down because I wanted to add another one and I heard you have to add them in pairs of they dont get alone.

We added the new guy and guess what ... he went for the left corner .... now there is not a magnet now there is a thermometer. They get a long pretty good but they are always at the left corner.

sometimes they swim around with the others looking for food, but most of the time they are in their house ... the corner.

I think it is normal. Mine did the same thing. They sleep on their sides bobbing up and down. I purchased one and two weeks later I purchase the second. The second one paired up with the first and they are happily hosting the top right corner of my tank. They will do a few laps if I turn off the powerheads. Oh, and try not to scare them when they are sleeping.

Wilkerson explains in her book...ocellaris are considered middle of the tank swimmers, while perculas are notoriously known as top of the tank swimmers.

I have had quite a few true percs do this. They will stop only really when they have a host. And you have to also be careful that since they are up at the top that they don't jump out of the tank. I have lost 4 in my life like this. Clowns a live without a host, but is reality they need a host of some type exspecially to stop swimming up at the top of the tanks. Mine most in large green hairy mushroom. I have a friend whoes host in a learther.

Mine are in a 12 nano, they swim around the whole tank when the lights are on, but go straight to the top as soon as they go out.

Mine do the same. All over the tank until the lights go out. Then they are on their sides at the surface. They seem to alternate between the rear left and right corners.

I have GSP's, a large green hairy mushroom, and frogspawn. They're not interested...yet.

In the wild, it is true that they need a host. Many of the best breeders breed clownfishes without any host, just a clay pot. Besides, I have so many hosts to choose from(RBTA, many euphyllia, mushrooms, etc.) and mine choose to host the overflow. One went U-tube surfing one time, but they are still healthy and happy and, by their own choosing, still hostless. Do be careful of jumpers, as mentioned above.

try a LPS coral they seem to host them a lil easier frogspawn or hammer works great

My percula rarely leaves the rear right corner of my tank. Half the time I can't even seem it cause it's so tucked away. It's pretty much like I don't have a fish in there at all. =/ The last few nights I've caught it swimming the tank in the dark. It doesn't even do that with the lights on.

One of the reasons I believe many people have problems getting their percs and occys to host in their anemones is that they have them (anemone) placed too far down in the tank.

When I see a “I can’t get my clownfish to host” thread, I’m going to start asking where their anemone is located.
