Permatex dielectric grease

To be more specific,is this reef safe?

Probably. But I would never risk a few hundred or thousand dollars worth of animals to find out.

A much better option is silicone grease meant for human use - BS gave you one source; another one is your nearest Lowes or Home Depot's plumbing section.

No sir ,me either, thats why im asking. Lowes &Home Depot carries 90% pure silicone grease, neither are meant for human use . For all i know they have the same chemical makeup as Permatex Dielectric Grease.
100% pure silicone grease is made up of Silicon base and?

There is no way to know about low level intentional additives (not required) or impurities (rarely mentioned) from an MSDS, so unless someone else uses Permatex themselves, there's no way we can predict its safety with certainty.

Not sure what you mean by that, but most silicone greases are poly(dimethylsiloxane). In some unusual cases, some of the siloxanes have other substituents as well, such as H or other organics:

The o-ring grease from dive shops is safe. You can also get food grade silicone grease from beverage supply places, restaurant supply houses, and homebrew supply stores...it's used for lubing keg o-rings.

Not really sure by what I meant by that either Randy :D What i was alluding to is that "100% Silicone Grease" is not made from silicone grease its 70% this 10% that and 10% the other. I was trying to conclude if the ingredient listed on the Permetex Dielectric Grease MSDS sheet would be reef safe.
And now I know...sorta

Thank you Bill

Pure polydimethylsiloxane is reef safe (within reasonable amounts), and is safe to eat since it is the main ingredient in many anti-gas medications (e.g., Gas-X; the ingredient is called simethicone). But MSDS, like yours, often do not add up to 100%.

Well I dont want to be the Guinea Pig to use Permatex Dielectric Grease.
You think Gas-X and bacon grease would work?:lol2:
Thanks Randy

I'm not sure which product you're referring to at Lowe's or Home Depot, but they do sell a 100% silicone grease product that is meant for potable water plumbing. It comes in a small snap-cap container that looks like a lip-gloss, and it's reef-safe (I use it frequently).

I checked both Lowes and Home Depot dkeller, I must have missed it. I found Oatey silicone grease "Grasa DE SILICONA 90%" and some other silicone grease in a grey container. Do you have a brand name ?

Hmm - Mine simply says "Danco" and "silicone grease" on the cover, though it otherwise looks identical to the picture that you posted.

So long as it was sold for the purposes of potable water plumbing, you should be good. The principal problems with silicone grease or glue as applied to reef tanks is the addition of mold & mildew inhibitors, and folks not letting silicone glues fully cure before use.

One thing I'd note - if you simply going to use this to lubricate o-rings, the amount you'll use is going to be very, very small. The correct way to use it is to wipe the o-ring with it until it's coated, but no visible grease remains.

The purpose I had in mind for it was , Bulkhead Gasket and Union O- Rings.
Thank you for the helpful info.
