Perry's 120 Gallon Reef

Nice pics!
I like your green pavona. I'm a fan of that coral.. You don't see them as much as you used to..
I have a brown one I'm growing out..

I'm with you on the veggies.. Actually, I like to bbq the veggies with balsamic and oil, get them a little blackened and they take on a little smokey flavor.. Better than blood!

Really beautiful angel addition, I've come real close to trying a Multibar Angel a few times and I keep wimping out. I'm not even so much worried about the nipping, but simply getting it eating. Any luck on the potters eating prepared foods yet?

Btw I really like your side "FTS" photo, everything is looking great. :D

Thanks Josh,
From my understanding, the fish will graze, which it is doing well at. My tank is well established, so I am confident it's eating. No coral nipping yet, but as we know, that can change. I have tried pellets, larry's reef frenzy, PE mysis, but yet to try frozen cyclopeeze, read somewhere they like it, so I will update any changes in eating behaviors :)

Wow, looking really good! Beautiful Angel.

Thanks Mark, I appreciate the kind words!

Wow tank looks amazing my friend love that angel.
Dan, what's up man, long time... Thanks for the kind words, I am stoked on the potter's, it's a very unique flashy fish.

Everything looks really nice perry:beer:
Great corals with awesome colors!
That birdnest is sick!!!

So my beloved guinea pig:p:p,how are things with that angel?
I know it's rather soon but just give me something:)

Mike, the potter's is doing very well, grazing in the tank, doing what many report happens with these fish, the one day they just go for usually frozen, and the rest is history. From my understanding this can take months, but it's belly is plump, so I am not concerned at this point. Apparently they prefer mostly algae and sponges, I have plenty of that :) When it decides to eat, I have everything to offer. Larry's Reef Frenzy is by far the best prepared food I have used. All of my fish go nuts for it. I will try cyclopeeze next, if not I may get live brine too. I think it will just take a little time to work out. I will update as soon as I see a change in eating :) Thanks again!

Wassup Matt! Yeah that is the ORA mint pavona, I think it is important to keep different sps, this one has a unique growth pattern unlike any other. Anyway, hope things are well and you are not freezing your butt off yet :)

That seri is stunningly colored Perry, i actually like that a lot even though it's a seri :) I need one of those !

Thanks for the info perry:beer:

No problem Mike :) The fish is continuing to pick, have not seen it accept food yet, but time will tell, still healthy and lively.

Wow Perry everything is looking great :) and that Potter's is gorgeous too, they're such lovely fish :D

Thanks Dom, just started to dose Salifert's aminos a week ago, hoping to dial colors back in, sort of dealing with algae and cyano at the moment, so just doing a weekly dose of 2 ml. Once I get the algae under control, I will up the dosage. Hope all is well mate!

Thanks Andrew, for such a common coral, I am pleased with the color and health of the Ponape :) Cheers mate!

Great minds think alike lol I've just started to add some Acropower the tank again last week as well! Thinks were looking a little pastel for my liking so I've added some to saturate the colours a little more and the zoa's have reacted really well which wasn't what I was expecting! I'm only dosing about 4-5ml a week too until I'm on top of the algae as well but the Algaefix definitely seems to be doing it's job :)

Dom,
Thinking about trying this product, the algae and cyano increasing, so we will have to see, using dr. tims waste away right now, seeding bacteria to eliminate cyano, but I have a thought to get a bit more aggressive, the results after 2 weeks are suspect, so patience is wearing thin mate.

The tank is looking great Perry. I love the Angel addition. How is he behaving so far?

Thanks Sahin, the angel is awesome, not accepting foods yet, but grazing and seems to be quite well with tank mates at this point, so hopefully I can get the angel feed eventually. Unfortunately, a lot of algae right now, they tend to graze, so let me get this algae in check, then I will have some better info, lol...

Thank You Daniel, kind words my friend :) While the corals look amazing, I am still not on top of the algae at this moment, so I may have to look at methods such as you employ, the fuge and setup you have is brilliant, hopefully I can mirror your efforts and get both colors, but also no algae. Best to you!

Tank is heading in the wrong direction, smell of eggs(sulfur) in the air, been dealing with white slime and red slime, trying to eradicate. This morning to wake up to fish death of my hawkfish, something is foul that tests are not picking up on, only thing I can think to do is water changes... Fingers crossed!

Ouch, hope everything works out Perry. I have lignite carbon you can have and GFO if you're short on anything. Let me know how I can help out.

Sorry to read that buddy:(:(
WSs and maybe running some carbon will surely help.
Really hope you'll get through it with the minimal losses.
How about the corals, are they ok?

Thanks for the love guys,

First off, the corals again are not suffering, they are colorful and vibrant, this is why I am confused. I have been dealing with a weird whitish/clear slime that resides on the top of the tank, which made it's way to the sump, so was in multiple spots. It seems to be non life threatening, at least to corals, I suspect it is a bacterial slime, which may have caused fish to be stressed.
Next, I lost my sand sifting goby a few weeks back, it was spooked and jumped the overflow, it ended up dead in the sump. Since it's death, the tank has gone unsifted, I have noticed an egg smell/sulfurish, so I am thinking that I am dealing with a funky sandbed now. I also have had red slime, and increasing hair algae too, so I know phosphates are present.

Solution 1: Today I am pulling my sump and all equipment, and giving all of it a thorough cleansing. When I re-install and hook the equipment back up, I will be using filter socks. I have a huge amount of sludge in the sump, this is likely a contributing factor to my problem. This will also include 15 gallon fresh water change, which will replace the water tossed from draining the sump.

Solution 2: Later this week I will be removing the sand bed, I plan to do this by siphoning areas at a time, by moving corals into a holding bin and again, using replaced water to force another water change. First round I want to remove 1/3 of the total sand, I estimate another 15 gallon water change. I will repeat this process until I am 100% bare bottom.

Solution 3: I will be holding off on any new fish until first 2 solutions are complete. After this, I plan on keeping my fish down to the remaining 5 until I can confidently know that whatever funk has caused me to go awry is in check. I will monitor colors and use aminos to keep colors going, should I become too nutrient limited.

Thoughts:
I have unfortunately temporarily lost my job, the place of employment caught fire, so I will not be returning to work for a spell. I will likely take on odd jobs, and be Mr. Mom for some time, so no better time to essentially re-boot, and fix some weaker points within the system. Luckily, I have fresh RODI filters, new bucket of salt, and everything I need for a good spell, so the loss of income will not break me too bad, at least to keep my reef going, lol... So, as you can see, I should have no problem with time, so I will take this unfortunate mishap, and apply energy to my reef, and getting my house in good order, the outside landscaping could use a touch of love too :) Thanks again guys for all the love, I will keep you posted on my results, here's to a nice break from work, and some fun playing with the tank:) Cheers!!!

Great plan Perry, welcome back to the BB club!!

Sorry to hear about your job. What a great attitude about it though!!

Perry,

that white slime at the top is usually bacterial slime from overdosing either pellets or vodka/vinegar. Could that be it? I had this prior to losing many of my LPS corals from the tank getting too clean.

Mark,
This is likely the case, one other thing to consider is that I stopped smoking cigs a few months back, I converted to an electronic vapor cig to get over the hump, my girlfriend and I both. We used these commonly in the room, I think this may have not helped as well. That being said, I have not been C-dosing during the last couple of weeks, and have noticed a decline in the slime. Time will tell, I have also decided to not use the e-cig in the main room too. Things that make you go hmmm......
