Perry's 120 Gallon Reef

Wow, you've had a lot of trials and tribulations in the last few weeks. It's great to hear your tank is on the rebound. Sometimes things (like temporary job loss) are blessings in disguise. Way to make good of a situation. Cleaning up a tank like this always feels good ...once it's done! ;)

Thanks Mindy, I appreciate the kind words.

Photo Update:

All acros have been in the frag tank for about 5 days now, this is after undergoing a treatment before going in. The shallow top down viewing is so nice with this tank, I am really liking how closely the corals can be inspected. As far as my display goes, it is still in the process of hair algae reduction, therefore I am only running 2 blues. All corals in there are not showing any signs of stress, or color loss. This however gives me the ability to not fuel the algae growth through the intensity of 8 bulbs on the powermodule, as it throws a ton of light. Ok here are some photos, some browned a bit, but should recover, I will be updating the journal accordingly.

^^^^ wow  when are you going to have frags. Lol those all look great. My lfs just got a shipment of the aqua forest salt and had a sale for $50 on the big buckets. Almost got it just to have for when I start back up again in a few months.
You've been pretty busy with the tank. Hope everything goes according to plan.

Alright for reference, I have been logging many hours cleaning and scraping the display, that is after I removed the sand bed, as well as removing all acros. So this is where we are right now, thanks for looking :)

Looking good Perry! Those Acros are looking great in the frag tank. The display looks much cleaner now too. Did you change the scape?

Sorry to see you needing to go through all this Perry, sucks mate but at least the reboot will be fun and you can fix all those scaping issues that bug all of us at one time or another.
The AF sounds cool and it's the perfect time for some 'sperimenting' i reckon, your acros still look bloody nice even in the temp holding tank

Matt, thanks for the compliments, frags are always available, I have some recently plugged, in 3 months they will be ready for you ;) Hope all is well with you!

Thanks Mindy, the acros did not brown as much as I thought, the PE is getting better with each day. The display has gone through hell and back for the last few weeks. I have slowly been working on algae removal, coraline scraping back wall, scrubbing rocks, cleaning sump, new lighting, etc... :) The frag tank allowed this to happen where my sensitive acros were unaware of the cleaning going on in the display, as they both deliver into a sock, so even though the display would get cloudy, the frag tank remained clear, if anything, the nutrients that did make it to the frag tank were greatly appreciated by the acros, lol...

I'm looking forward to seeing the reboot when it's complete!

Thanks Matt, this is going to be a journey, I plan to keep the display acro free for 2 more months, maybe a bit longer. Like Andrew stated, this gives me time to address mistakes that were previously made, that way when it is time to move acros over, I feel confident of their placement. The thought is to just run blues on the display only to discourage algae growth, now that the display is nearly free of that unsightly crap.... :)

Andrew,
Where the heck have you been mate :) Been thinking about how the sps board has been experiencing doldrums in the lack of your presence. You bring a lot of enthusiam and good energy, hope to see some additional Biggles experiments soon, hope your tank is well mate! Happy New Year :celeb1:

Those acro colonies look very happy Perry  Hope the algae reduction in the display goes well.

Update Time :)

As a wise man named Biggles once said...."Sorry to see you needing to go through all this Perry, sucks mate but at least the reboot will be fun and you can fix all those scaping issues that bug all of us at one time or another." This advice is spot on, I decided to once and for all, position rocks so the low corals stay low, and the middle to top part of my reef for sps, mainly acros. So, a re-scape was accomplished a couple of days ago, hands all cut up, infected from handling live rock, but that did not stop me, so here is my 2016 new reef start!!!

Next door in the frag tank, I have my version of "acro porn", lol....

so here is my 2016 new reef start!!!

Awesome! Congrats! I bet you got those rocks all spiffed up too! I hope your rock pile is more open than it appears in the pic though - is there lots of flow getting through it all?

Yeah Mindy,
The rock pile looks like a rock pile, but is quite hollow inside the structure, many caves, and lots of flow. Good thing is that I can see from underneath the tank any areas of detritus build up, so I can siphon periodically if this occurs, so far, there are no settling areas, all detritus in suspension. I wanted to do a taper down reef from the overflow side, to sort of hide it, or mask it naturally with rock. There was no additional rock added, the rock was just re-scaped.

At first didn't really like it but after looking at it again and again it has an open feel to it. and lots of room for the fish to swim.

I have a feeling that when I move the acros over to the main display that you will see the vision :) I know it is not looking good at the moment, but I feel I am going the right direction for long term success. Side note, got a mess of AF stuff on order, also received 2L of siporax today. I will also be adding a vertex 1.5L zeolite RX to the system too :) Brace yourself, things are about to get crazy around here, lol....

I'm really interested to see it with the acros placed, things are looking great Perry! Happy New Years!

Happy new year Perry, the new rock work looks good to me mate. You create a beautiful SPS reef with the positioning of the corals, not the rocks themselves to any great extent.
I hope the AF method works a treat for you buddy, if Sahin can manage it i'm pretty sure anyone over the age of five can.......:reading:

Your version of porn is X rated buddy :)

Absolutely! The rockscape is really just important to give you something nice to look at until the Acros grow in! :D

Excellent, sounds good! Are you keeping it BB then?
