Perry's 120 Gallon Reef

Glad the tank survived MACNA Perry! I didn't know AF was making their own media it will be great to hear your thoughts on it.

If you do make it let me know. It is just an hour from me so I have plans to attend.

Absolutely, would love to meet up man! Cheers!!!

We need some pics of the Life Bio Fil. Also, forget about those new lights and doser, you need to get their new CaRx. That thing looks amazing. :)

LOL, I will have to look into it, did not see a CARX in the brochure, but was thinking that someday I might need to go this directions!

Man, you did well, Perry!
I'd love to see that new media. I want to remove my dsb and replace it with the Life Bio Fil..
But also, I'd be very curious to see a pac sun over your tank. Always been interested in those lights. Customer support isn't great in Canada, I don't think, though.

Thanks Matt, yeah, the owner and I spoke of this :) As far as Life Bio Fil goes, I have a couple of shots and will post after this reply. Hope all is well man!

Appreciate so much the fact, you share all those things bud:beer:
I know you have some pics,so i'll just wait for them:)
Fiance keeping the tank healthy surely must have gained some bonus for her!

Hey Mike, the tank survived, now a 7 day cruise at the end of the month, and then we are all clear, lol. I have some pics, just have to download from my phone to the computer, will be doing that in a few days :)

I will be posting in my next update, thanks for checking things out Tim, hope all is well with your tank too :)

Here are a couple of pics of the media, one is in the sump in a strainer basket, and the other is a close up. I tested today and nitrates still holding at 2.5ppm and phosphates still 0.00ppb on the Hanna photmeter handheld. My first thought when I saw the media is wow it is light, second is that it ships slightly wet, ready to go. I immediately noticed that the media was quite porous, this will be a great place for bacteria to grow. In the pic it resembles zeolites, but it is nothing like it, the surface are is not as smooth, and it is much lighter material. As I have researched, this is a clean and natural sourced rock called pumice, "a very light and porous volcanic rock formed when a gas-rich froth of glassy lava solidifies rapidly". From my understanding this pumice is naturally sourced and from a very clean source, it is widely known for water purification, and is seeded with AF's proprietary bacteria. It would be guess to share what it has done to the tank, but I am certain I came home to elavated nutrients, I could see the Red Robin had darkended, and a few others had richer colors. I did not rinse the media, I pulled the 4 liters of matrix, and replaced with AF Life Bio Fil, using 2 liters. The water was a bit cloudy in the sump, this was worked out within 10 minutes or so. I will be monitoring nitrates to see if it impacts them, as I would like to drop 1-1.5ppm. Here are a couple of pics :)

Interesting. In the pics, it looks identical to matrix.
Do you know when it will available?

Matrix is smaller than this media on average, as I just replaced with this media, it has similar density, and porosity, as far as I can tell. The big advantage is no seeding time. I find matrix to be more rounded, as this media has more natural rock form. Anyway, I suspect it will be coming to the states in a few weeks, as is their line of media reactors. I am also learning of new skimmers too.

Man Perry that looks really nice. Must have been nice to be able to meet the other AF gurus lol, and get free stuff from AF.. dont lie you know you did lol. Anyways os it just like matrix, were you just rinse it out every month or so and put it back. Or does it have to be replaced?

The stuff looks nice. I will be getting some when it's available... The one issue I have is the replacing... Not sure I understand why.. If it's like sopirax and matrix surely replacing it may be counter productive or at best just unnecessary? I understand this comes pre seeded but it shouldn't become "unseeded" from being in a tank a while.
Was there any mention of prices for the media at macna?

Wow Debora looks nothing like her avatar.:blown:

Very interested in this new media, it's a bit unbelievable to me that it comes pre-seeded? I don't even know how that works but as long as it does, who cares?? I'm guessing they have some guideline for how much media to use based on how much you feed, or how much you want to feed I imagine? Looking forward to learning more for sure. :)

This media is really no different, all these companies think that media in aquarium should eventually be removed, cleaned, or replaced, but I am not sure it is completely necessary. Yes, I have to admit there are nice perks supporting AF :) Cheers!

Michael,
I would not be of too much concern with replacing, 10% every 6 weeks should not be too much on the wallet, I think the price point shall reveal that. Otherwise, I would treat this media the same as any other, so replacing is just a recommendation, nothing more than that. I will likely follow the guidelines and replace, but I will not discard the media, likely I will soak in vinegar, then RODI, then sundry, and then add back in. I do have a plan to recycle the media :) Cheers

Cool! Very neat to put faces to the reefs. :)

Thanks Matt, I feel the same way, we should make a thread on the SPS board with our photos, this would be great for these sort of events. I am pretty outgoing, good thing I was, otherwise I would not have met so many people that I have interacted with here and on the other boards :)

Yes, the product is very cool, I will be monitoring conditions. When I returned, I know my nutrients were up a bit, I could tell by seeing the corals. I did not even do a water change after MACNA yet, and 24 hours after the media hit the tank, NO3 and PO4 were where they were from last test. So, I will definitely be testing, I want to make slight reduction in NO3, so interested to see what the media swap out does, not changing any feeding variables. Cheers Josh!!!

Awesome seeing and hearing about your trip Perry, something us Aus guys only get to dream about......:)

I think the whole throw some away and replace is just a bit of allowable BS profit driven marketing personally, i mean i would tell you lot to replace 20% of my media monthly if i was selling media so that one isn't a big deal either way imo. I like the pre loaded idea since i know how long it takes to get some response from fresh matrix.
Still waiting for AF bacteria, vitality etc to clear importation BS so that stuff is 6 months away :(

Did you roll up that background for me like i asked Perry, you should be able to squish it into an envelope i reckon

My 2 cents (if it is worth that much) is that you might notice nutrients go the opposite direction than you hoped. In my mind, removing 4L of matrix for 2L of AF LBF means you have just reduced your opportunity to store bacteria by half. Only way that doesn't negatively affect your nutrients is if the LBF is more porous than Matrix. Time will tell. I hope to add the LBF to my 4L of matrix since I am not running any siporax in a reactor.

Also, if your nutrients don't change at all you could try removing them all together and see what happens. If nutrients go up then we know for sure it is the matrix/LBF. :)

LOL Andrew :) I do not think it is necessary as well to continually replace the media. I hear the reason is that Aussie wants to zap any live bacteria, thus turning it dead, with really anything coming from abroad, as to not mess with native land indigenous species. Who knows, hope that they release it soon!

Ed,
I can tell right away that this media has no uniformity, and is know for high porosity. If you examine closely, you can see micro to squinted eye the pores that channel deeply into the media. I will update Sunday, tomorrow, as that is my only off day this week. From a visual with no variables changed, I am seeing some killer color morphing happening, so maybe I can finally get some pics :)

Photos taken today, left side finally showing some progress.
