Perry's 120 Gallon Reef

Thanks Perry, your thread, amongst others, convinced me to try out AF's Component 123.

Given enough time (To assure my chemistry is still as balanced as it is now using this system) I'd eventually like to try out Energy and possibly Vitality after that. I'll definitely have to go below the instructional dosage as I currently use about 16mL of all components for my 100G mixed tank.. go figure! [emoji38]

Cheers Flo!
I thank you my friend, hopefully Life Bio Fil will be here soon, you should order some, I am certain it is available in the EU. I am very interested to see how quickly it impacts the nutrients, will be getting some for sure upon arrival :)

yes can´t wait to get my hands on the Life Bio Fil! :bounce1:

Cheers!

Perry,
I read the Life Bio Fil write up on the AF site. Could you give a quick write up on the product? A clearer description, use, and your view?

Thanks as always.
Kevin

Sorry, I haven't heard about low dosing Flatworm stop. Is there a thread I could read or explain the theory behind it.

Thank you

Marty

Mike,
Sorry, but I still dose 2ml Flatworm Stop every night when dosing AF supps. I have seen examples with corals having slime that is at least 2 to 3 times of which I have seen before, so it really helps to reduce pests that prey on our precious corals, not anecdotal by any means, at least based on my observation :)

Thanks Electrobes! I appreciate the kind words, best of luck on the Component system, I have it dead locked in, mixing myself now :) Yes, best to always go to the side of caution with less then to go full steam ahead without time to observe :)

Should be soon my friend :) If you get ahead of me, let me know your thoughts!

Kevin,
At this point I have only had access to the same info that is on the site, so as soon as I have a chance to use the product, it will be hard to guess at this point... Cheers

Hey Marty,
I only use this as a pre-caution, I really have no evidence of flatworms, but I stock with animals that typically help with removal, and treat the reef like it is infected regardless. This is why I dose under recommendations, as I do with really anything I dose, more time to observe and see subtle shifts and impacts of things dosed :)
Cheers

Yes please..

I am just as curious as you guys, lol... :)

Perry's 120 Gallon Reef

Will be following your thread Perry I am sure I can learn a lot more from you. I do share your thoughts on the importance of a good husbandry.

The reefer plays a part too rather than just dosing drops of this and drops of that and hoping for things to happen.

Cheers

Perry's reef is stunning because of what HE does - the AF just gives him finer tools to work his acro magic with ;)

for sure!
my last info was they are soon to be ready ^^

Cheers

Cannot wait, especially for the Poly Glue, I think it is going to revolutionize fragging :)

Hi Riz, thanks for following along, yes, this community is full of amazing hobbyists, and very humble too might I add. We are all here to support each other, we all can learn from one-another, and the end game is for everyone to have a reef they enjoy :) I can tell you that I would love to have a cold beer and sit back and relax and view that tank of yours :) I feel it is important that people understand that AF will not fix problems, it is more of a system for fine tuning, with quality maintenance routines, consistent parameters, and a good import and export game, AF can produce some killer colors ;)

Ahh... Thanks Mate, big ups to you my Aussie friend, you are too kind mate!!!

got it at home but i had no chance to test it... :sad2:

Slacker, lol.... Very intersting how the polymer activates with heated water and becomes pliable, but once in the tank hardens quickly. Neatest thing is the polymer is re-usable, so whatever is not need can be used again. Very cool indeed :)

yes!
but i figured i will not use it for only one frag... will test it at the next fragging session! :spin3:

Great write up on your tank Perry, the AF system seems pretty simple and the results speak for themselves.

Good husbandry is always necessary, anyone who's been in the hobby long enough should know that. :D

Thank you very much! I do the mix myself version now, and I can see that the 4L containers will go quite the distance :) I doubt you would have the consumption that I do, but it will get you there :) Cheers

120 gallon tank, and the AF program is as follows:

Probiotic System:
*AF Probiotic Reef Salt- 10 gallons every other week
*Pro Bio S(bacteria source) - 4 drops in AM after skimmer in sump
*NP Pro(carbon source) - 4 drops in AM after skimmer in sump
*Siporax- 2 Liters in TLF reactor slow flow(non AF)
*Seachem Matrix - 4 Liters in sump passive(non AF)
*AF Zeo Mix- 3 cups in 1.5L Vertex Zeolite Reactor(Stacked changed every 4 weeks)
*AF Carbon- 1.75 cups in 1.5L Vertex Zeolite Reactor(Stacked changed every 4 weeks)
*AF Phosphate Minus- 1.25 cup in 1.5L Vertex Zeolite Reactor(Stacked changed every 4 weeks)
*Filter sock to keep sump clean, changed every 3 days

Minerals/ Trace
*AF Component 1- 230ml per day contains: Ca, Mg, Sr, Ba, Co, Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn, Ni, Cr

*AF Component 2- 230ml per day- contains: NaHCO3, F, I

*AF Component 3- 230ml per day- contains: mineral salts and K, Bo.

AF Foods and Supplements:
*AF Energy- 4 drops at night, after lights out
*AF Build- 4 drops at night, after lights out
*These are dosed together every other night*

*AF Vitality- 4 drops at night, after lights out
*AF Amino Mix- 4 drops at night, after lights out
*These are dosed together every other night alternating*

*AF Power Food- 3 times weekly 3 spoons mixed with tank water lights out at night
*AF Fish V- 2 drops every other day with frozen fish food, while thawing

Picture of the sump, this is the most organized I have been with the sump. The matrix was recently taken off the floor of the sump and moved to a spaghetti basket as to not allow for settling. My nitrates went up to 5ppm and phosphates to 0.09ppt. I knew it was time to break down the sump and do a thorough cleaning, in 3 days, I am now down to 2.5ppm nitrates, and 0.03 phosphates. I think it is important to point out that normal maintenance and husbandry is imperative, regardless of how many drops of this or that added to a tank...

My skimmer looks this way constantly, this is the backbone to my the tank, best skimmer I have used so far.

[/IMG]

4L of Matrix moved from the floor of the sump, middle chamber, to a strainer basket to allow flow and less chance of settling detritus.

IMG_7441.jpg

2 Liter siporax in a 2LF reactor that holds 2 Liters perfectly, flow from manifold and set to around 50gph.

IMG_7444.jpg
[/IMG]

Vertex 1.5 liter zeolite reactor with AF Zeo Mix, AF Carbon, and AF Phosphate Minus, (amounts are listed above)

Separate cabinet to house my cords from equipment not used in sump and my monitor, dosing pumps, Component 123, and all additives and supps.

Finally a FTS

Perry,
As usual, the system looks great. I hate to be "that" guy, but I'm not finding the AF mix your own stuff for sale. Nobody locally here in StL has it for sale to my knowledge, and I'm guessing I'm not looking for the right stuff.

I thought you were using Component Strong to mix your own Component 1, 2, and 3?

When you get a chance, could you break down exactly what you are using to mix your own AF Component 1, 2, and 3?

I'm very interested in AF products, (just need to get my NO3 levels down) and will be adding SPS to tank soon.

Thanks for your time.

Sergi,
Yes, this is the same product and is intended to be dosed equally in 3 mixes.
You will need AF Calcium, AF Magnesium, AF KH Buffer, AF Reef Mineral Salt, and AF Component Strong(4 small bottles in each pack, each 50ml, which is Component A Strong, B, Strong, C Strong, and K Strong) Here is the breakdown:

Bottle 1:
AF Calcium~ 50 grams per 1 liter
AF Magnesium~ 10 grams per 1 liter
Component A Strong~ 5ml per 1 liter
Component B Strong~ 5ml per 1 liter

Bottle 2:
AF KH Buffer~ 80 grams per 1 liter
Component C Strong~ 5ml per 1 liter

Bottle 3:
AF Reef Mineral Salt~ 25 grams per 1 liter
Component K Strong~ 5ml per 1 liter

* I use the the premix bottles as to re-use the product, they are all 5 liter bottles, so I multiply values times 5

Thanks for that Wheelman, I missed that the first time around.

Hey Josh,
Thank you for the kind words man :) Yes, I am happy with the results of the AF Program, but I try as best as I can to any future user to preface the program as being complimentary, not a replacement to proper husbandry...

MACNA this week :)

I will be going to work with AF at their booth, so any of you guys going, stop in and say hello, would love to meet you guys!

That's great Perry! Considering your work with AF I thought you could add this to you data bank of AF experiences:

I, with my 100G half cylinder, went from 16mL (Component 123) a day (Used for about seven days) to 24mL a day (Took about a week of daily testing to see this change) to 32mL a day (Changed to this about six days ago, right before my five day trip).

The day I got back (Yesterday) I tested the tank on all parameters (Alk, Cal, Mag, NO3, PO4, and Salinity) I'm shocked at the need to increase it again. At least this time it isn't a major increasing need like my prior two raises.

So, within three weeks, to keep parameters stable my tank went from 16mL to 32mL and will need more. The reason why this intrigues me is because of my dosing using my prior liquids (BRS calcium and Baking Soda). I was dosing about 16mL a day of each for months and it kept parameters stable.

My system has progressed well with my non Component system, but with it now using AF's Component 123 I am pleasantly surprised. My growth is indeed faster.

Your updates and tank convinced me to try out Component 123, and that's a big step for a guy, after 12 years in the hobby, isn't much for change. [emoji38]

PS - I also started using Reef Salt, and am pleased with it. It's nice not needing to manually lower alk via acid. 😥

Edit: I should probably add a pic for reference as to why my needs are so low versus most others..
