Perry's 120 Gallon Reef

Keeping us in suspense Perry. I wish you a great 2017 and your pics look great as always. It's tough to get real attached to acros during the downswings you just have to enjoy the ride :)

Sorry about the loss. This is a tough and unforgiving hobby at times. But it makes the rewards all the sweeter. Also, those of us watching have even more respect and admiration when we see a beautiful reef because we know what is required to maintain that beauty.

Your remaining pieces still look beautiful. The first, third , and fifth photos are centerfold material. Gorgeous.

The Ponape is a common coral. Some don't like it because even though it is SPS, it is not an acro. You have taken the average and made it spectacular. Absolute stunner. I do not enjoy looking at a tank full of designer names, I enjoy seeing beautiful, healthy corals.

I would be interested in seeing a roll call of your tank , as to who made it and who did not.

Also, do you have a wish list? corals that you plan to acquire to fill those spots?

Thanks as always,

Kevin

Hi Perry

Based on my own learning from my mistakes, i will suggest to avoid replacing any of the lost corals. Is not easy, I know that by fact. But the ones that survive whatever have triggered the dead of the other colonies, will be better addapted to your tank parameters/conditions.

Cheers
Daniel

Hey Daniel, yeah man, not thinking about new corals, I agree with you completely. I appreciate the advice and glad to see your tank back to doing well again!

Sorry to hear about the losses Perry. But, those shots look very nice and seems most are doing pretty well. Do you have any idea what caused the issues to start?

Hey Mike,
Several pages back, like back in late Nov, I encountered an alk spike, this triggered an event, at first it was isolated to only about 5 corals. It ended up being more like 10. This caused unsteady alk, and although I tested daily, it was bouncing. I am down to barely dosing, however seeing the uptake again, I anticipate that number will grow. Hope all is well man!

Also, sorry to hear about your acro losses. Was it an alk upset?

Thanks buddy, I appreciate your kindness, yes 100% alk related :)

Tim,
I hear you, what the tank needs is exactly what it is getting. I am barely home anymore, I have a new job and it is in the aquatic industry, so I am around everything tank related all day, so the last thing I want to do when I get home is tank stuff. So, the tank is in Cindy's hands right now, she is feeding, soon will be dosing, and I will be teaching her how to test as well. Part of me wants to pull my cherries and scale down into a smaller easier to manage system. We shall see, Cindy does not like this idea, she loves the tank, right now more than me, lol...

Hey Kevin, thanks so much man! As far as role call, I have lost so far Seasons Greetings Monti, Red Robin, Chips Acro, small Tenuis, and soon it looks like the PC Rainbow, Cali Tort, Miyagi Tort, and Sunset Milli. The last ones are still hanging on, however when I see new white bone spots under the cut line of where I cut burnt tips, I usually begin to assume they are heading south. It is not a big deal, all these corals are 100% backed up in a LFS I have a tight relationship with, and buddies tanks close by. It is just a matter of starting over again. I have access to wholesalers now, so I am going to probably be focusing on wild aussies. It will be awhile though. This weekend I will likely pull any sick acros and chalk up as a loss. I am actually fine with this and look forward to new scaping and new colors :)

Sorry about the loss Perry.

As I have learned in my 11+years with SPS...."That's life on the reef" You don't do this hobby for this long and not have your share of setbacks, we all have them. Side note, dude I love your write up, finally saw printed version, awesome stuff mate!

Sorry for your losses Perry! Subscribed, beautiful colors on your SPS

Dom,
No worres man, glad to see you back! The new setbacks are going to be replaced with stunners, so I am not too upset, the tank will look a bit clumsy with new frags and old colonies, so I will have to be well planned on coral choices and locations. I think I will probably go the direction of mini/colonies of wild aussies, that way the tank will be more balanced. Happy New Year bro!!!

Hey Perry, the happy corals are still looking happy. Sorry to hear about the losses, though!
That always hurts.
You are so lucky you have a partner who is into taking care of the tank! Keep it! And her! :)
Good luck with the new job!

Perry, those healthy ones are looking really healthy! Sorry about your losses, this hobby definitely keeps you on your toes. Sounds like you've got it under control though.

Time to say goodbye to the 120 Gallon SPS Reef!

Thank you everyone who has followed and contributed to the 120. It is 2017 and with the new year comes a new job, a new office build. I am transitioning the 120 into a mixed reef, it will be in Cindy's hands, the tank will take on a larger variety of corals, addition of nems, and many softies. The tank will run quite basic, I will still use Probitoic Reef Salt, but the tank will no longer run with an emphasis on low nutrients, I am confident that with all the media, and heavy skimmer, the tank will run well without any carbon or bacteria dosing. I may give the occasional drop or two, but the focus comes to my new home build.

I will begin a thread, but I basically pulled every cherry coral out of the 120, removed mini colonies and a few colonies cut at the base. So, keep a look out for my new tank, 25 gallon all sps barebottom high energy tank. Thanks again to everyone who has been behind me cheering me on the whole way through. I am very excited to be able to do larger water changes, and have all my favorites in a new tank.

It has been a pleasure Perry. I will be following your new thread too. You can still have high energy reef with sandy bottom. Just saying.

Ha! I'd say sounds like you got a keeper ;)

I'm sad to see you pulled all the cherries but I will be very excited to see this new build!! Welcome to the smaller tank club!

Wow. Huge game change but enjoy the new changes. Every new step and phase in life is to be enjoyed. I look forward to seeing the new system with the focus on the stars of the show!

You will have yours hands full and your attention occupied while you learn what makes your new system happy. Some years back, I had a 10g high energy nano with sps. It was a balancing act for sure, but lots of fun. With your knowledge and attention to detail, I know the tank will be beautiful.

Good luck and I look forward to following along.

Kevin

You are one of my go to guys for AF products Perry. Can't wait for that 25gallon and how it is going to look like and pretty sure I can learn lots more when that begins.

Cheers,
Riz

Wow Perry, can't wait to see the mini SPS tank.

Sorry for the Red Robin loss. The only reason I still have mine is dumb luck that I moved a frag to another tank just before I hit the rough patch. Once it decided to go it's gone.
