Perry's 120 Gallon Reef

Sort of yes.

I boil RODI in microwave, and pour over carbon measured for use. I allow it to cool over night or for several hours then rinse a few more times with RODI. I usually prepare all medias night before I exchange.

Thanks Perry. This is something new for me. I usually just dump them all on top of the other in the reactor.Something I noticed, my po4 level usually shoots up a little after changing over the medias and was wondering why this is so! I think now we know! Rinsing will be the new approach going forward.

Cheers,
Riz.

Just checked out your last video--love it. I've never tried one. Your corals look spectacular

With your camera skills, should be a no brainer, lol... I love the camera skills and the colors of your corals. Thanks for the nice words man!

Great vid Perry! Your colonies are really growing in.

Thank you very much, I appreciate the kind words and checking in on the journal, hope you have a Happy New Year! Cheers

Hey Riz, when I pour the hot/near boiling water over the Carbon, I get a major reaction of bubbling, it is my thought that this gets air trapped in the carbon to release, therefor it does not want to rise in the reactor. With Zeo Mix, my thoughts are that I would not want any dust that comes off them to be in the tank, so I am sort of excessive with my routine of cleaning medias, but it seems to work :) Cheers and Happy New Year!

Thanks Perry. I do notice that the carbon reacts when you pour water over them. Also you can see the dust on the surface of the gases and bubbles resulting from that reaction. It really does make sense now to clean them first. Thank you!

Love the video Perry nice work! Tank looks great sorry to hear about the acro flu. We all catch it at some point :)

Hey Tim,
Thanks for the kind words. I am thinning out the herd and have already pulled and discarded the Red Robin, and Chips Acro. They continued to necros, and I believe that the damage would continue. The reef scape has opened up, and quite honestly, I have found room for corals with far more potential that were sort of not on display, or out of view. Hopefully I will have a new video sometime in Jan. Thanks again Tim!

Try is with near boiling water, the reaction is way more intense :)

I just read your entire thread! Very impressive results! I just bought components 123 and pro bio s and np pro today...i have a question to start the process..how do you spread your component dosage? I want to start at 50ml each per day and test. Is it ok to drop the whole 50ml or spread it lets say in 4 doses? Should i wait between each components or they can be dosed together? Thanks for your feedback!

Hello and thank for taking the time to read my journal :) I personally feel that a spread dose is the best way to keep things stable. I deliver every hour, or 24 intervals per day. I spread the doses by 5 minutes apart as well, this will help to not precipitate the minerals. That or dose to different parts of the sump. Happy New Year!

Thanks for the reply! Will do as you do! Seems to work:). One more question...isnt using pro bio s with the reef salt the same as using the probiotic salt? Why use both? I was told by the lfs that it as the same...im thinking of switching to the salt from red sea coral pro but not sure if i should buy probiotic salt...i see you are using probiotic salt and probio s...

Hello,
Yes and no, the Pro Bio S is a different strain than in Probiotic Reef Salt, however, it is not an absolute to use Probiotic Reef Salt with the Probiotic Program. Many users prefer Reef Salt versus Probiotic, due to the fact that you cannot store the Probiotic Reef Salt once mixed, it needs to be used straight away. My experience is that SPS corals actually expand their PE versus shutdown like I have noticed with other salts. Likely due to bacteria and aminos/vitamins in the Probiotic Reef Salt. Cheers

Hey Perry, There's a lot of talk about your great video and indeed it was great... on the LAST page.
There is a very noticeable scarcity of acro porn on this page.. just sayin..
Happy new year!

Just a method I started when using zeovit, they did not require boiled, but heated water to soak carbon, some things don't change, lol... I also believe it helps to make the carbon not to rise in the reactor, IMO it stays in place this way. I am sure soaking could achieve the same effect. Cheers

This makes sense. I will be following your practice from now on perry.

Happy new year.

I am going to change carbon tomorrow. I will follow your practice -- seems to be a great idea.

Happy and Healthy New Year !!!:celeb3:

Thanks for the tip regarding the GAC, worked like a charm. Happy New Year to you and your beautiful reef :)

Hi Pwery

That vidoe is amazing. Beautiful tank and acros !!

I know I have not been posting a lot lately, but I have been reading and I want to wish you an excellent 2017.

All the best !!
Daniel.

Update:

I have still been nurturing corals through an episode of tip burn, which originally impacted the Red Robin, this set off an event that ultimately has began to impact other corals. I have now lost Red Robin and Chips Acro, they were pulled because the tissue necrosis moved from tips to base and when I see tissue peeling, I toss the coral every time. I have learned the hard way, and as much as it sucks, I feel that the coral will just cause larger problems trying to cut and recover, than to just let it go. My parameters are stable, the tip burn is still plaguing at least 10 corals, while most seem unaffected, which is weird to me. So, the scape is opening up, and the positive side of me is happy to have relocated some nice pieces hiding in the scape, to more be more on display and easily seen. While I am sad of the losses, major colonies, I am happy that the scape and the new year will bring. I have 3 acros that are questionable, and 4-5 others that should heal ok, time will tell. If not, I will likely be making some changes, lol... Bigger and better news for me this year is still under wraps, hopefully soon to a new announcement about career change... Thanks for subscribing!

A few shots of some of the healthy corals, so it is not all bad on the reef, lol :)

Hi Perry

Based on my own learning from my mistakes, i will suggest to avoid replacing any of the lost corals. Is not easy, I know that by fact. But the ones that survive whatever have triggered the dead of the other colonies, will be better addapted to your tank parameters/conditions.

Cheers
Daniel

Sorry to hear about the losses Perry. But, those shots look very nice and seems most are doing pretty well. Do you have any idea what caused the issues to start?
