PETCO Anemone

My wife manages a petco and the biggest problem is lack of being able to QT things and the shipping companies. I wanted a carpet for the sale this weekend but the 5 carpets she got had no water in the bags (literally 0) and were at 58 degrees when received. Makes me mad to see how stressed out the animals arrive

It's actually pretty common to ship them w/out water, they hold their own.
Nems are exposed to air at low tides for quite a while and often, half a day easy.
I've had vendors ship to me this way.

This is how many exporters ship anemones. Totally a normal and accepted practice. The logic is that without water, the nems can't release waste into the water. Once they foul the water, it all turns to crap (literally). However, the opposite logic is that without any water, the nem holds the waste inside its body which could lead to internal issues.

Since no one has ever done a study to see which shipping method is better, and since the ones without water manage to survive, it's still done this way. I happen to think it's because water adds weight, and weight costs more money to ship. Why add water when there's no apparent benefit? Many times snails are shipped with only a wet paper towel or newspaper and they are fine.

I also know that some retailers ship nems with a lot of extra water, and these nems still come down with infections and die. So extra water is not the answer either.

Finally, many anemone species live in tidal lagoons where they are frequently exposed -- oftentimes fully exposed -- to air. They also live in very turbid water and thrive. So, we know that something is happening when the nems are collected and held that causes them to bleach, and/or develop infections. Healthy nems can typically take quite a beating and still manage to survive.

Beat me to it!

Yeah, this nem didn't have much water. But I just had to know so I can report that the nem is definitely still sticky, so I'll just let it do it's thing from here on out. He's actually looking a *little* better.. Fingers crossed. Lights have been dimmed towards off cycle now so we'll see what tomorrow holds! Thank y'all for the advice!

Not at this time, they may even help it.
Only if it was small or showing signs of stress, does not look like it.
As long as that hadonni is at least 3-4x the size of the clowns it should be fine.

It definitely is. I just got back and shined a light into the tank and the nem is almost fully extended again so that's promising. I may try some Mysis tomorrow. :lol2:

Again, I would totally leave it alone, not even food this soon, you may just stress it.
Opening up to light is a good sign.

Yes, Petco's do sell marine life, not all of them, and some are better than others.
At some point they did focus on hub stores that stepped up on the marine end, not sure if they are still doing those.
I don't advocate, nor knock Petco's, they are like LFS, they are not all the same.
All animals should be treated/QT'd accordingly.

I just went on there website, and they now refer customers to liveaquaria.com

The petco here in anchorage ak get corals but they look terrible when they do. The nems they send without water usually smell like death. Long flight I guess

The healthiest gig I've received so far was packed with no water.
The worst was packed in several gallons.

I personally like to feed mine...they seem more happy, more outstretched and seem to stay open more....And they grow faster and can sexually our asexualy reproduce depending on the species. I have a Condy, bubble tip, and a carpet

Mine eats lrs reef frenzy. They flourish great!

I got a green Haddoni carpet from Petco a while back. I went ahead and treated it with ciprofloxacin just because of the reputation they have. When it was in treatment, I put a mug in there. Which made moving the nem easier when cleaning the tank. Now it is in a tank with clowns. I took it out of the cup and and went floating every night. So the mug went back in and I just piled live rock around it to hide it. The nem stays put, no more worries. My advise to you is like every else stated is to relax. Mine looks great most of the time. But every now and then it doesn't. I just keep the tank water clean and it is doing well. Good luck.

I got lucky and out of my years of fishkeeping, only seen maybe two type of clowns (maroon and tomato) host a condy anemone but very rare that happens. I stumbled on a black clownfish hosting a condy and had to buy the clown and condy with rock at Petco. You do find some good finds there on occasion. He is in my avatar.
