Pete's 110 build

well the purple/blue may be more a purple/red - it's not as red as these pictures but will be interesting to see what it looks like under normal lights once it's placed in the tank

found these on the purple/red gorg - they look like glass nems (aiptasia), guess I'll be doing some culling while dipping

While looking for places to put my new corals, I noticed my red/blue St Thomas mushroom splitting - at least it looks like it started to

Beautiful!

I do have a question. You mention that you rarely change your GFO and your PO4 levels are undetectable. Why do you rarely change the GFO and to what do you attribute your low PO4 levels to?

You got me thinking if I have ever change the GFO since I put it in over a year ago, and I don't think I have.

Low p04 with the heavy feeding I do is probably due to the large amount of live rock I have and the bio diversity it and the macro algea in the sump bring. I do have a deep sand bed in the refugium but it's pretty small. I checked P04 today and it was bairly detectable at 0.03 per salifert. I think I may buy one of those Po4 Hanna checkers next time I place an order so I can keep closer tabs on it.

Being somewhat old school I'm not realy for carbon dosing or trying to create artificially high bacteria levels. I do believe with a larger amount of live rock you create low flow areas, more surface area and density to alow for larger populations of anaerobic bacteria, sponges, clams, and other micro and macro fauna. Don't take me wrong I love to see tanks with minimal rock scape and large coral colonies but I also feel there is some added risk. The risk being you are not providing enough living space for those small beneficial natural filtration critters, to not only thrive, but to expand and shrink to support the fluxuations in a somewhat ballanced eco system. Not that we can completely replicate a true self contained eco system but I do believe the live rock is a key piece of the reef puzzle.

thanks - the tank is 48" x 18" x 28"

Must of been really weird moving from your 300 to a tank only 18". I have a 24" deep tank and I see 18" tanks and wonder how any aquascaping could possibly be done, but look! You've done it, and made it 3 sided viewable! Awesome!

wow man i found your youtube videos and tracked you down here, man i really want to try and get more Polyp extension like your tank. i have all kinds of sps, im running 6 t5 IceCap and get loads of Par from them. im getting good growth but they just dont open up like yours. at night they open up a lot more but why are yours open in the day too? my buddy has a outdoor reef system and he gets lots of PE in the day too. im using a red sea berlin skimmer but it kinda runs on the dry side at best. i though i may have dirty water but your tank seems to like it i guess. its like compair apples and oranges i guess. you have a lot of equipment i dont. i got a skimmer, refugium, BRS 2 part CA & ALK, Chiller, T5's, and a bunch of powerheads. maybe its because i dont feed as much as you. i dont even turn the pumps off when feeding. maybe to much flow to feed? i dont know why they come out so much at night but not the day. PH shifts? i do have large PH shifts at night, maybe they like the lower ph. at night it goes to 7.8 sometimes acording to my ebay ph meter lol. in the day it hights 8.3 or more depending on if i am dosing to fast.

thanks Kovy

and yes going from a 300 to a 100 was a challenge and still is. I keep finding I want to do more then I have space for, like more fish & more corals

day time PE is very different then what you get at night. It sounds like your corals are healthy and growing but the day time PE can still be stunted by fish that nip (even if just occasionally), red bugs, low nutrients, low pH just to name a few. I try to keep my pH swings to 0.2 in a 24 hour period so yours may be a bit much at 0.5

I also find corals seem to love some occasional kalc, I don't know it its due to the elevated pH or if there is some element in kalc or both but I've always found sps just seem to do better if even minimal amounts of kalc are introduced.

thanks for tagging along and the nice rating ;)

Thanks for the input.

How much rock do you have?

Just looking for extra info to help solve some issues I've had this year.

maybe around 150-170 lbs. I didn't measure it but I had around 400+lbs in my 300g and I'm pretty sure the ratio of rock to water is higher in the 110

I finally got around to mounting the acropora plana. Sorry not the best picture as the lights were already in the dim to off mode and the coral wasn't happy from me messing with it.

changing out the GFO for the first time in about a year seems to be paying off as all the corals are looking fantastic. the two new gorgs are looking better every day. The red one with white polyps opens 100% for most of the day.

The purple gorg with the yellow polyps opens more and more each day. At first it was only opening about 25% of it's polyps for a couple hours a day. The amount of polyps opening and frequency of them opening has been increasing everyday, yesterday it opened about 95% of its polyps and stayed that way most of the night. I had my hands and even my arm in the tank a lot last night and told my wife the yellow polyp gorg must like the taste I leave behind in the water.
