Pete's 110 build

Wow, psteeleb I just finished reading your thread in one sitting. I don't know how to explain the gratitude for all the help and information that you have given us fellow reefers with this thread. This tank is truly an inspiration to everybody.
You too Drummereef! You guys are just chalk full of info and great ideas!
Now if only I could get MY tank started!

Thanks fishmonkey your feedback is very much appreciated. Tell me about what you plan to set up or point me to your build log :)

I placed an order for some more CuC, a couple sponges and a gorgonia today
I expect they will be delived on Friday when I get back home

50 Blue leg hermits
10 Scarlet herimt Scarlet hermit crabs
Arrow Crab ( Stenorhynchus seticrnis )
Red tree sponge
Redball ball sponge
Purple frilly gorgonia
10 Nassarius snail
20 pack Florida cerith snails, Cerith floridanum

the female mandarin was cruzing around the tank today looking for food and my wife insists she is already growing her fins back. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed and will post updated pictures or video of her on Friday

you like hermits, Pete? I've never cared for them much and havent had any in my tanks for years.

I'm good with some types

The blue legs fight all the time and I often refer to them as self destructing tank fodder but they are excellent detrivours. Without them my bristle worm population goes up. The blue legs don't eat the bristle worms but they compete for the same food source. I am also convinced the real small blue legs clean around the base of acroporas including picking off eggs of predacious AEFW's. If they get too big I will usually move them to my 29g, but very few of them grow to maturity.

The scarlet's are very very docile yet still great detrivours, I've never had any issues with them.

So more hermits = less bristle worms. It's really an individual preference but my wife does not like it when the bristle worm population gets to big. I will agree most hermits can be a nuisance and may cause damage to some corals and or kill other tank mates, especially ones that grow larger.

I also like the arrow crab (but you can only have one) as he is a predator of bristle worms and helps keep their population in check. Another good bristle worm consumer are boxer shrimp like the banded coral shrimp, but they are more aggressive and will kill smaller shrimp like peppermints and harlequins

here are updated pictures of my dendro
it started as 2 polyps and is now 6
I don't directly target feed it but do spray mysis shrimp in it's direction and try to keep the cleaner shrimp away when feeding :uzi:

Amazing..

thanks SJ

----------------------------------------------------

I picked up 3 new corals from a LFS, it's the first time I've been to this one as it's a good 40 minutedrive. I grabbed a orange gorg, some orange line clove polyps and a sun coral

After aclimation and a coral bath in ReVive the gorg opened up within the hour so I got a few pictures and some videos of it. I'll post pictures of the other corals after I get them plced and they open up

this first one is an hour after it was in the tank - I can see some body and polyp damage so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it recovers nicely

this second video is it eating cyclopseze - even though it took in some of the cyclopseze it appears to be a little large for it, so I'll try gettting some close up videos feeding rotifers a little later on

here are the orange line clove polyps
the color pops under the actinics but I can't seem to capture it quite right, they are more vibrant or fluorescent then shown here. Under full lighting they still show the orange but are more bland

I thought they would be okay in the corner but as you can tell they get too much laminar flow so I'll have to move them

The order did not get delivered as expected so I had to put it on hold till the next time I was home. Right now it is scheduled for a Tuesday delivery but it is also forecasted to be 101 degrees.

My wife tells me all the new items are doing fine but she did find the orange gorg fell over into the xenia, she lifted it back up and it appears to be fine.

She also reported the female mandarin continues to do better.

That pearlberry makes me so jealous! I lost mine in the move and haven't been able to find one down here since.

sorry to hear that - if you were close enough I'd cut you a piece
I find it to be a fast grower in my tank. I need to do a growth update on all my corals. The Pearberry has grown to what must be a good 6"x 4" from a frag of an inch or so in less then a year.

Great news about the Mandarin, glad she's doing better. Those Duncan's are awesome, love how the polyps look in the flow.

Thanks Brett, I have 3 of them and all 3 are doing very well. The one in the video is the largest, maybe the size of a softball. Like the pearberry I need to do a growth update comparison as it started at about 1" with a couple heads.
The other 2 are rescue corals that had several dead heads and a couple that were just hanging on, now both are looking full and healthy. We feed the tank cyclopseze and mysis and try to direct some mysis to the duncans (and dendro) but the shrimp steal what we try and feed them.

the new CuC came in today as did hte sponges and gorg
the spnges were huge - I just hope I can feed them enough

Great new additions! Really dig the purple gorgonian. Do you feed Phyto on a regular basis? It said something about it liking micro-plankton sized foods on Live Aquaria.

yes I do dose Phyto but it was only 2-3 times weekly, I'm going to up to to at least once a day.

I tried to get some decent close ups of the purple gorg tonight but there was a bit too much water movement for a good shot but got this one.
file.php

Not getting a good shot I decided to video and durring the process the gorg decided to pull in all it's polyps. Due to some past damage on this one branch the tip of the branch did not get the memo and the polyps remained extended. It always amazes me seeing coral polyps communicate and respond to an event accross the community.

My APEX sent me an email today indicating a high temperature reading.

The temp has been very stable latey between 80 and 81 and now all of a sudden it jumps to 83. The APEX turned off the lights as programmed. I called my wife and she found the ventalation fans were off. After some investigation she found the fans became unpluged; thank goodness an easy fix and things are back to normal. The APEX did it's job, love it.
