Two pictures for you regarding your coral.

marc_eot.jpg

blue_tip_acro_0601.jpg

In case people are wondering; in the first picture top right the larger deep purple with blue tip staghorn is from the same mother colony as the smaller pinkish coral on the right in the second picture. Marc has been growing the smaller one out from a 1-2" frag that I gave him a couple months ago. I always noticed it was a different color set then the mother colony in my tank. It's interesting to see the larger colony I gave him is holding the same colors as my mother colony but the smaller grow out coral is very different. Marc may chime in with a better description but my main colony and the large piece Marc has are both a deep purple with bright light blue tips and usually light blue polyps; the small grow out piece has a green tint base, a light bluish pink main body and light blue tips. It also looks like the polyps are a different color but also have more PE then my main colony.

It will be interesting to see these two coral in a few months. I'd like to see if the two corals Marc has morph to some common color set, or, if they will stay different. If they stay different, it may give some indication that conditions while in the early growing stages may have a lot to do with what color the coloration molecules produced by the coral end up producing, and/or, play some determining factor on what colors the symbiotic zooxanthellae take on or are most accepted by the host coral.

Maybe they aren't the same coral after all. ;) I'll do my best to keep them both happy, of course.

They are doing great in your tank Marc.

The mother colony in Pete's tank is enormous. It's absolutely amazing to look at.

so wait, let me gather this real fast. marc has 2 frags that are different colors, but came from the same colony. one frag is the same color as the mother colony, but the other frag is a different color than both the mother colony, and the other frag? thats interesting. i wonder why?

The smaller frag grew up from a small frag under Marc's lighting.

The other is a recent addition from the mother colony that matured under Pete's 15,000 watts of lumenbrite halide lighting.

aptasia extermination 101 ( turn up the volume on your computer as loud as it will go! ;) )

Looks like the rock was exterminated along with it.

you guys are cracking me up:lol:

I'll have to start taking notes and write a book on "101 ways to kill aptasia"; or maybe it's "101 ways how not to kill aptasia". Just got an idea; see if "mythbusters" can find a way; those guys love to burn and blow stuff up.

Amazing photos as always....

You refer to this coral as "gr(een)n yel(low) pocci"

grnyelpoci.jpg

I've never heard of a "pocci" before. To me it looks like porites, is it similar, related?

poccilipora:) the polyps were pulled in some, but I thought it made for a neat picture. normally it's a tad bit fuzzier

next project - water change station

next project - water change station

my next project is installing a water change holding tank.
I think I'm going with one of these, this one fits my space perfectly. If you're looking for a remote rectangular tank they have them in all sizes in about 6" increments in each direction. Prices seem reasonable but they charge for shipping and handling.
http://www.tank-depot.com/productdetails.aspx?part=R182424A

I plan fill the holding tank by adding a tee and solenoid valve to my RO/DI supply (the one that goes to the ATO reservoir). I'll add in a manual switch to turn on and a float switch to turn off the solenoid. I'll fill it to about 6" from the top.

Inside the tank I'll have a pump that will be piped up with valves to drain and re-circulate the water inside the holding tank.

Once the salt water is mixed I'll open a valve on my main distribution header off my main tank pump to start adding additional salt water to the tank filling it up to a overflow that goes back to my sump. Once I've turned over the water in the holding tank I'll shut the valve form the main, reposition the re-circulation piping valves and pump out the holding tank completing the water change. I'll see about adding a sketch later.

thats a good price for that tank. i was looking at usplastics.com and the same tank is almost twice as much as the one you found at tank-depot.com... nice find.

i cant wait to see the water storage system.
