Hey Pete, quick question. I joined the build late... what type of lighting are you running on your tank?

I run:
2 165w VHO atinics for 14 hours a day,
3 250w 12k reflux MH's for a 8 hours a day but want to cut back,
& 2 400w 10k reflux MH's for 2 hours

the 5 Mh's are in lumenbright mini reflectors on a home built rack that also holds the VHO's

I like the looks of that regulator, Pete. Did you say what brand/model that is?

as TJ pointed out - it's a Reef Fanatic :)

Lumenbright, Pete. I had it wrong forever, calling them Lumin Brites last year.

Btw, look at that tiny blue stag! :D

hehe - that does kind of date that picture, must be a year plus old now, and seems like just yesterday I changed out those lights

just checked - the lights went in on 2/18/08 :)

Mine were changed around April, I think. So you've had them cooking that reef for more than a year already.

I know I'm a little late, but awesome pictures of that stag outta water.....

Make sure you let me know the next time you come up north!! I wouldn't mind a frag of that monster!! :D

Pete, thanks a million for the acid last night. I appreciate your taking the time to help me mix it up too.

I did another 25% water change this morning, pulled out my dart, and gave it a good cleaning. The Reeflo now works like a champ, and it quit jamming up on a cold start. Last week I cleaned up the vortech wet sides, and a week before I did my skimmer pump.

I'd recommend cleaning all of your pumps to anyone switching off of two part to a calcium reactor, because from this point on the excessive abiotic calcification will start to wane.

finally

now to hook it up

If you hook it up tonight, you'll at least have the next two to three nights to dial it in a bit. Give me a call if you decide to start working on it and need an assistant. :)

PS: Your corals are going to love the new reactor once you get it going. I can't wait to see them a week or two into running that thing. Mine have really started to take off since I added the Korallin. I can't scientifically explain the extremely positive results, but I certainly won't complain!

It looks like my Saturday opened up after all, if you need help with that Calcium Reactor Pete. Just let me know if you need any help.

I've got to give Marc credit, he dialed my reactor effluent and bubble rate in almost exactly right off.

glad to hear it fixed the issue you were having.

I need to do some major cleaning of my sump, skimmer and skimmer pump.

thanks Marc, I'll let you know how it's going, but your always welcome regardless.

Right now I'm moving around some electrical (power and controllers). Next I need to calibrate and install a new Ph probe in the Ca reactor, everything else is hooked up and ready to go. The plan is to get this thinng full of media and water tonight.

plan for the initial settings:

set water to 20 -30 ml per minute - I'll let it run without Co2 like this for a couple hours to get the air out and make sure there are no leaks

set Ph controller to 7.0

set Co2 bubble count to 1 every 3 seconds

then monitor and adjust

I just got my order in form USplastics; some quick discconects and shut off disconnects (all plastic)

these bodies have shut off valves built in. I'll use one on the feed valve to the Ca reactor so I can disconnect the tubing without shutting or readjusting any other valves
valvewithshutoffdisconnect.jpg

these others will be used on my in & out to Kalc reactor and the effluent flow from the Ca reactor
disconnects.jpg

now I need to see if I can find some 1/2" to 1/4" threaded bushings

Sounds like a great plan. Marc set mine up with a much higher effluent rate to prevent clogging the effluent needle valve.

He set my regulator operating pressure between 12 and 15, and set around 60-70 BPM to start (one every second or so). At that rate, the controller solenoid rarely had to shut off; the effluent PH stood right around 6.5-6.6 and the effluent DKH was right around 28.

Post up what your effluent DKH turns out to be, although it won't be much higher than the tankwater until you hit 6.5-6.6 or so. I can't wait to see what your setup looks like, call me later.

Awesome... Thanks. :)

The Ca reactor is up and running, now I just need to keep tabs and tweak it in over the next few days :)

As I was doing a late night check on the tank, I noticed a mithrax crab sitting on the edge of a monte plate swaying back and forth at the edge of a very high flow area of the tank. Very odd indeed. At first glance I thought she tore off a chunk of coral and was holding it in her two front claws, so I had to take a closer look. After close inspection I'm like; "what the heck is she doing some funky suicidal dance", but sure enough turns out she's releasing a batch of new baby mithrax loose in the tank :) Evidence they breed in captivity.

not the best pictures as it was at night with flash and besides no one is suppose to see this :eek1:
