my blue mille finally decided to start some new growth
kind of odd the direction it decided to take. I guess it wants to spread out and table.

here are a couple other odds and ends from yesterday

the turaki seems to be growing (even if it's ever so slowly)

the sunset monte continues to encrust nicely - it's time for me to find a nice rock to mount it on and place it up front someplace for a more enjoyable view :)

and here's one I don't post often as it almost a weed in the tank, but my wife and I both like the flowing polyps of the pocillioporas. this one looks like its doing great on the bottom of the tank

thats alot of coraL!

well it takes a lot of corals to raise lots of red bug to keep a mandarin fat and happy  and I have one fat mandarin.
ask Marc or Bigjay if you don't believe me

joking of course - honestly as I was writing them down I was amazed at just how many I do have. and those are just the SPS, although, it's what I have the most of

but I do have a big fat mandarin (and red bugs)

As I was dosing phyto and feeding the Goniopora I couldn't help but notice how colorful Marc's mille continues to get. It was almost a patriotic red white and blue. White or a very light blue on the tips turning to a deeper blue then a shade of coral pink.

these pictures don't do justice when compared to the human eye (both in color contrast and detail). I must have taken 20 pictures at different settings to try and capture the full spectrum and contrast, these are nice but limited to the camera on hand.

Well those are great! I really like the color. And the contrast on the first pic between the three really makes for a nice pic.

didnt last time you noticed you had red bugs, you killed them. then that brought on an onslought of aefw? does the headache continue? what a drag!

so a mandarin will eat red bugs? isnt it weird how its hard to keep a large pod population (in a small tank like mine) to feed a mandarin. but if i had red bugs i could probably keep 3 with no problem?

that probably not true but just a thought? i really want to get a red scooter dragonet, but their feeding habbits are the same as a mandarin and my tanks tiny! maybe you could pass part of your red plague my way. i dont have any SPS worth saving anyways. :D

are you going to do the whole kill cycle like last time again?

I treated for and killed all the redbugs a year ago. I really think I got them in on one of two montepora's I got about 2 months ago and didn't do a red bug treatment on, as they showed up shortly after.

I can't swear to it but my mandarin eats everything, as does my fat six line. But both of these so called "coral pest cleaners" got fat and lazy on mysis so they don't hunt like they use to. Can't say I blame them; why eat crunchy little ticks when you can have meaty shrimp

If you do look, have your LFS feed some frozen blood worms, I've had very good results with the scooter blennys and mandarins eating them. It must be the shape and/or smell.

I'm going to start a red bug treatment tonight so wish me and my remaining shrimp luck :) I think I'll do the full treatment at 130% strength for 14+ hours, wait a few days and repeat, as I did last time.

2 hours into the first interceptor treatment and I found 4 dead or dying hermits.

the blob appears to have more redbugs on it then when I started but they may have just come out of hiding.

:eek:And what's this :eek2:, either red bugs are coming out of the polyps or the polyps caught the dying redbugs and may be consuming them - justice may just be served on the reef tonight :)

when looking around for dead hermits I found a couple dead pods floating around the tank :(

I also saw these on the far overfows, I've seen them before and think they are chitons - anyone know for sure?

Yes, those are chitons and nothing to worry about. I think they are unaffected by Interceptor.

thanks Marc

3 hours into interceptor treatment - I actually saw a hermit crab still alive and both the shrimps seemed to be doing fine

at this point there is no visible evidence of red bugs on the blob

and some other unknown thing that looks like a pair of red hands reaching down in a cave of feather dusters - I'm guessing some sort of sponge

Are you doing any more treatments, or just the one? I wasnt able to catch all my shrimp/crabs when I did it a year or more ago, but they all made it. It was a bit entertaining to watch them stumble around the tank, but as soon as I nailed a good sized water change they returned to their usual selves.

Yes, I plan on doing a second treatment

My shrimp made it through fine last time, but I lost all my mytrax crabs and a couple hermits that I couldn't get out.

I'll probably run this treatment till about 6:00 tonight (20 hours) then start the carbon and skimmer. I'll do a water change tomorrow, or maybe later tonight (depends on how late we are out). I'll also change out all my reactor media and rinse them out in hot water, maybe even bleach them. I flushed all the piping with the treatment so I should have my whole system pretty much covered with exception to the inside of the skimmer body but so I may turn it on in a while but leave the air off.

I do plan on repeating the treatment later in the week, right now I'm not sure exactly when but I don't want to go longer then a week.

Last time I did this I had some offspring show up about 5 days after the first treatment so I repeated it a couple days later. But last time I ran the first treatment for 15 hours, so I'm going a little longer this time.

I thought I read someplace they don't lay eggs but somehow the offspring made it thorough the first treatment, so I'm thinking I need to wait at least a couple days

here the blob looks pretty clean
redbugs11hours.jpg

but this close up may show one
redbugs11hourscu.jpg

this batch of red bugs is definitely smaller then the ones I had last time, so unless there are some different subspecies I think I got these at a younger state. here is a picture from last time I had them

The treatment recommended is three times, one week apart per dosing. I did that about 1.5 years ago, and have yet to see a red bug again.

Congrats on getting this started. The blob can grow even faster now. :D

Why did you choose such a long treatment? I only did it for about an hour before doing the water change. But I was using old data. ;)

Interceptor needs to be dosed 12 hours. I keep my quarantine running at all time, merely topping it off as necessary. Occasionally, I'll do a water change, replacing what was removed with more water from my reef.

Each time a new coral arrives, it goes in that tank with a Salifert spoon of Interceptor for the first day. That way the coral can settle in and I can erradicate any sneaky ticks, as Pete would say.

Within a day to a week, I'll eventually move the coral into a dip and then my reef. I don't rush it though.

Hmm, I had success doing it, but it's easy that I'm misremembering. Checking back, the info I used recommended 6 hours, so I probably did a bit more than that.
