Pete's 280 log

Marc came by today and took some pictures of the tank, so I hope he posts a few

Later on I noticed a couple of the clams were closed up, then here comes my regal tang. He somehow gets inside the clam cage and as I walked up he takes off out of there.

After I cleaned the area up and put the cage back, the clams opened back up. But then I notice some bite marks, as seen here on the middle clam

Nice... Did you just mix the kalk? Or did you mesh mod the maxijet:lol:

hehe- interesting concept - I wonder what Randy would think

Actually, I just added kalc powder for the week and mixed it up a bit.

I went to visit Pete today, and took my camera along. His reef is really enjoyable, just taking the time to look at it. Here are a few shots I liked.

Full tank shot, of course. He hung up some fabric behind the tank which made the corals stand out nicely.

A nice reflection shot while the pumps were off of the A. formosa colony.

Here is a rare shot of the Ricordea collection, taken from above.

This picture was taken several times, and even the reflection off the front glass was pretty. Still, here's the actual M. capricornis with a lavender rim.

How many fish can you count?

The elusive Blood Shrimp made an appearance, and this was the best shot of three:

Wow! I so need to move down there... that sounds familiar...

there are just so many cool tanks!

fantastic pictures Marc - thanks a ton for posting those

That one picture you got of me just reminded me I need to glue those blue tort pieces down again.

that reflection shot came out great, I like the cameo apperance by that anthias

I also like the Ric shot as I never get to see that angle in my tank (straight down on the front side), to bad I got another cyno outbreak :o

fish I counted:
9 chromis (1 missing - in the clam cage hiding)
7 anthias
5 tangs, and
1 wrase
so 22 ;)

other fish (not pictured):
Dori the regal
coral beauty
Jaba the LMB
Psycho (the bi color psuedochromis)
Fatso (the mandarin)
Nemo and Mone' the pair of clowns forever watching their eggs

Beautiful. I love looking at pics of your guy's reefs.

Although I must say I am a bit disappointed that the blob was not captured on film on this particular endeavor.

thanks Hop and TJ

I almost forgot; Marc and I discussed some issues with to much light for some corals in my tank. I have a couple that have turned very white since I started to run my 400's 2 hours a day (Servo mille & Neon green stylo). My blue tip stag is even getting light blue on the body when looked at from the surface, but no apparent damage.

We also talked about Marcs Unknown acro and i decided to lower it about 8" to see if it gets more blue lower in the tank

here it is for a day one reference, I'll compare it in a couple weeks to see what color morphs happen

 That's about as far as Pete can reach into his super-deep tank without using tongs!

That's an excellent new plumbing setup Pete. I might still have to pickup a kalk reactor too. It looks much easier to add kalk powder to that rather than mixing it in the topoff water. It also looks like I should have picked up a spare 1/2" threaded John Guest fitting for you while I was at Lowes. That would hook right up to your 1/2" threaded ball valve on the end of your mini-manifold.

You're going to love the new calcium reactor. Marc dialed mine in yesterday and both the alkalinity and PH held steady last night (DKH 9, ph 8.05). When your regulator finally arrives, we'll have to go get him to dial yours in.

thanks Jay, it has a barbed fitting and they sent a piece of 1/2" soft tubing, so I'm not sure if the JG fittings would work. I bought a couple barbed X threaded fittings for it; a straight through and an elbow type. I'll go with these for now but if they seem flimsy I may change to a more rigid tubing and use the JG fittings

Glad to hear Marc was able to help get your set up dialed in. Will you still be checking the alk daily to make sure it's hitting your demand level?

hey now

Jay - you know I can reach farther then that
I just can't see what I'm doing

And on the sixth day he said "Let there be Tort!"

consider that picture a construction progress photo of "Tort Ridge", resort condo's for chromis :)

thanks

I'll be checking alk daily for a few weeks to make sure it's dialed in. I'm sure that the effluent rate and CO2 BPM will need slight adjustments, but I'm at least halfway there thanks to Marc.

Next time I go to Lowes I'll see if they have 1/2" JG fittings. Is that ID or OD measurement? I agree with the extra care that you're taking, that's thinking ahead. The calcium reactor operates under pressure and circulates tank water. That has the potential to dump hundreds of gallons of seawater on the floor. ;)

that's my concern on the setup. It seems that monitoring alk on a daily basis is at absolutely essential for the first few days maybe weeks. An easy enough task if your home. Considering I'm out of town, I may have to set initial flows and bubble counts to 75% of recommended amounts, test the Alk drop and dose accordingly. Then the next weekend I'm home adjust some and repeat over a couple weeks until it is fully dialed in.

very nice pictures!

good luck with the new reactor. are you sure you want to set it up and let it run for the first time while your out of town? that seems kinda scary, unless you like living on the edge that is ;)
