Nonna58,

More than once we've considered making viewing that video a required step with registration here. :)

BTW, we block javascript embedding because of the potential for hackers to do nasty things with it.

I think that would be a smart idea because everybody (new members as well as old members ) need to be aware that this environment needs to a positive one, not a negative one. If they want to discuss things like LFS, let them do it somewhere else.

Well, I disagree to a certain extent. This is not my club, nor am I a member here but from RC's perspective, part of the dialog in the club forums should be about LFS, but limited to non-commercial participants (i.e. not owners or employees). With the anonomity of an internet board, it's hard to find the shills hiding in the shawdows. However, if they show up at your local club meeting, you can look at them and say "hey, I know you, you work at that store."

It's like been there done that... We have tried time upon time, and most times I just sit back and read, but at the cost of losing Reef Central as our club forum, I don't think we should talk about stores at all, even if it is about sales, ect...

Well honestly, ive talked to a few fellow reefers and members of RC (in person) about this topic, and i believe that this forum is a source for informatiion mainly pertaining to the topic, which is the saltwater hobby. By all means, calling people idiots and making bets to how bad a store is run, is out of context, but i believe the public should know our (registered users) opinions on a store and/or any special qualities the store posseses, whether it'd be good customer service or a current sale. For example, frodo gives a reason as to why he likes petmart, i believe he said something about his fish are healthy ect ect. Which is perfectly fine and i dont think we should flame him for backing petmart up... basically what im saying is that debating is good, flaming is bad.

Now on another topic i also think that advertising is different from a recommendation, for the reason that a recommendation usually carries a reason behind it, where as a advertisment is seen strictly for buisness purposes and has an affiliation with an employee or sometype of connection with the company itself. (for example, petmarts post about their "huge tank sale" back in July).

As far as the posting video, i agree it should be a requirement, LoL!

Not trying to bash any store here but don't you guys think that certain stores that have a high mortality and disease rate among fish and corals and such should be mentioned. it takes away from our hobby and kills a lot of the things we try so hard to keep alive. It just seems like a conflict of interest not to mention when we see something like that. It would be like if a local store had dogs and cats that were living say 20 dogs in one kennel and them starving. Dog breeders would say beware No? I'm not saying that any particular store is bad, but i think i can relate to someone when they say they don't appreciate the way a particular hobbiest store location takes care of its livestock. Furthermore, I've gotten livestock when i was a novice from stores with a bad reputation and most of the time the fish i got from them polluted my whole tank and killed most everything. Its a shame when you spend a lot of money on a sick animal and these stores set up cheap systems to move animals. Heck I've even beeen in chain stores that house eels and such with peaceful fish and anemomes so big they kill every fish in the tank with them. Its just disheartening. Just my .02

Nonna58,

Good video, but it will only work if the seach button also works. ;)..never got mine to actually work. It never fails I always get this:
We're Sorry

You've encountered an error. While the search engine is frequently the cause of the error, it may not have been your 'click' that caused the error. Ordinarily this error is caused by our search engine because the term entered caused too many results to be returned. If you encoutered this error while searching, you can try doing the search again and changing the term, or including more terms to limit the number of results. Words like "skimmer" or "sand" all by themselves are present in too many posts to make them useful as search terms.

Just as name calling was banned, I thought topics like this were banned too? Just my opinion.

Your opinion is biased based on where you work.

I'm sure if someone put up a post praising this store, you would not be complaining about removing it.

Tells you to search, but RC NEVER allows it:)

How am I supposed to see if the topic has been posted if I can't search? Is the volume really that high on RC to where they can't ever handle searches. Give us back our search power and I won't have to start threads anymore:)

As for problems with the store, call up PETA(do they do any work with fish, or are fish not pretty enough for them?), they might help with standards and practices. Until someone fixes a problem, it needs to be made aware to others. Keep posting bad experiences as well as the good. A while back, I started a thread that got me some heat from members of my club. Not once did I feel I was wrong for what I said. I laid a claim and in my eyes it was truth and I can't bring myself to apologize because people have an attitude about what I say. Same goes here. If you feel strongly about a topic, do not censor your feelings...they are yours and as true to you as any others.

Might I also add, I am very glad Mhurley is here to watch this. It keeps sanity and it also shows me he cares, not only about RC, but about reef caretaking in general. Keep up the good work and passionate understanding.

Note to self, one sure fire way to change the topic is to get everyone complaining about the search engine instead.

This post regarding a LFS should be posted in the "Vendor Experiences" forum not here.

Either is fine in our opinion. Generally, you'll find national type vendors in the VE forum. I can tell you if I was looking for an opinion on and LFS, I would go to the local forum first...VE would be a distant 2nd stop.

Not according to that forum's description:

"A forum for members to share and evaluate their experiences with on-line companies in the Aquaria hobby"

As far as I know PetMart doesn't have an online component and, in any case, this thread does not involve an online transaction.

I second what many have stated above - if a reasonable discussion (ie. no flaming or personal insults) can help steer new hobbyists in the direction of stores that are generally perceived to be of a higher quality, then I believe the discussion has merit.

Not everyone can make the TBRC meetings to discuss things in person and the website lists stores without any comment so that does no good in helping new people sort out the good from the bad. A search of the boards doesn't always bring up the most useful or timely information (ie - a discussion about a store from 6 months ago may not reflect the current situation) and I'd hope we all want to acknowledge that stores can and do get better and worse.
