Phyto/Rotifers First Attempt.

If you really get stuck, the under gravel filters at petco come with that tubing. I think its somewhere between 8-10 bux. Also you can put it right in the fridge to keep them longer.

Thanks Bill should I put all new clean water in it? and start over? and syphon the rots from the tank they been in?

Save about 1/4 of the water from the old culture and sieve out the rotifers from the 3/4 that gets disposed.

Can I setup a 10g tank on my system, set up a drip, and an overflow and keep the rots in that with an air stone? The water will be constantly changed. It may be silly but worth asking.

Not so silly ;) That is how continuous cultures are run :)

Thought about this but isn't the rot water bad for a tank?

With the continuous drip the culture water doesn't end up with the high levels of ammonia that can occur with batch culture ;)

PetSmart does carry Rigid Airline Tubbing because I have bought some from them, also any LFS shoud have it as well. I just spent $40 on "Live Rotifers" and didn't have a single live roti in it. Also check aquaculturestore.com

Where did you buy your "live rotifers"?

I like the drip method for the rots also but they feed on phyto and with it as an overflow looks like it would get flushed out into the main system?

1 drop every 2 seconds is 10 gallons in 24hrs. Any unlucky phyto or rots that get sucked in the overflow should just get consumed by the tanks.

i just set up my cultures and i have everything setup....hope it goes good.

After I followed the instructions, I saw that the rot water was much greener than the phyto water.
Got a pic of the setup?

i will get pics later but my rots water is a lot greener than my phyto too. is that bad? btw i got the rigid airline today. i had to drive an hour away to get it.

In 3 days it will look almost clear like my first pic. I dont think youre ever supposed to keep it that green, I think they did that so they didnt starve during shiping.

but my rots water is a lot greener than my phyto too. is that bad? cant be. sure you did not get them mixed up?? I keep mine were the rotifers water has a green tint. dont want too over feed them. can you see your rotifers and are they clinging to the sides

The way the instructions tell you to split up the shipment, the rot water gets half of the phyto. Then the phyto gets new 1.019 water to start off a 2L. This makes the rots really green for a few days. What is the rots clinging to the sides a sign of? Life? Its just funny hat I just noticed that on mine.

heres mine. see the roty's from about 10 til 3 o clock on the glass and out in the jar
