picked up my mantis last night!

well I am now the humble slave of a mantis! I picked him up last night and after putting the finishing touches on his new home, I acclimated him and in he went. right under the rocks. As always, I was quite worried about my new master. He is about 1.5" long smasher and upon initial inspection appears to be a Gonodactylus chiragra from the pictures on Dr. roy's site. This is actually unfortunate, as I thought he was a wennerea when I saw him at the LFS. His new home is only a ten gallon tank that I'm sure he's cursing me for already! He begged me not to take his picture last night after all his traveling and such(actually he threatened to break my camera). He wanted to look his best for his first internet appearance. after wetting myself, I decided now was a good time to shut off the light and go to bed! As with all my new friends my fiance was already trying to name him last night. such wonderful gems as Manny etc. After already being threatened for trying to take a picture I wasn't about to try to actually name him! I suggested quietly that we may want to wait until he lets us know what he likes to be called, and promptly rolled over and went to sleep hoping that Mr. Mantis sir, would not kill her in the night. For our indiscretions last night, Mr. mantis sir, luckily decided that death was not a good punishment as I had yet to feed him. He rather decided to turn off my alarm clock during the night! I awoke groggily at my appointed time anyway and went to directly to my masters residence. I turned on the light, found him still asleep and went about my morning business. after about five minutes I returned to find him in a MUCH better mood about 3/4 of the way out of his new home. I could see him snickering at the groggy look in my eyes. Seeing his improved mood I went to get the camera hoping he felt more photogenic this morning. When I got back to the tank his snickering had turned into an evil chuckle. He had turned around in his hole and started to kick sand out of two sides of his rock! The ensuing cloud of sand mixed with the microbubbles from the skimmer had turned his tank into a cloudy fog through which my camera could not hope to focus. My eyes could though and I could clearly see him flipping me the raptorial appendage! Hoping to ease his wrath I decided to make an offering of food. On my way out the door to work I dropped in two reef carnivore pellets and a small black turbo snail. Thinking it was a picture bribe, he stayed steadfast as I exited stage left.

Hopefully I will be graced with the opportunity to take his picture this evening and get a positive ID. Maybe he'll even tell me his name, although I'm sure he will still require me to call him "master sir"

this is the image he most resembles on Dr. Roy's list:

thanks thromgar! I can't wait to get home from work tonight to see if he's accepted my offerings and allow me to do a full photoshoot

RLF, I must admit that Tim (R.I.P) was an inspiration to my newfound friend. Apparently Tim's internet exploits have become legendary among the stomatipod population. I find this to be rather intimidating myself, as my as-of-yet-unnamed "master" says due to Tim's notoriety he is an aspiring celebrity and expects me to be his Public relations human. I asked him what talents he had that I should promote and he pointed to the crushed remains of the snail I gave him yesterday morning and told me not to ask anymore stupid questions or my face would look like that. I think I am going to start looking at getting him a part in an undersea mob movie.

I tried to take some more pictures last night for his portfolio and only managed a couple meager head shots. If my client allows I will post them tonight

I managed to put together a small photoshoot at my masters bidding. He has been far too busy with housekeeping lately to bother telling me his actual name. He decided that as a self proclaimed celebrity He would do his own episode of "MTV Cribs" with some before and after shots of his remodeled digs. Hopefully I will be able to get some better shots of him after he decides which room he likes best in his "Crib"

This is his ubermansion that he purchased upon joining the screen actors guild:

He found the accommodations rather limited and immediately demanded an addition:

Here is his new floorplan with some landscaping and plenty of bedrooms for him to chase his groupies around in:

He decided the exterior was not up to his high profile image and required something less "ghetto" than the 18 watt coralife light sitting on top of some plexy. I was once again pushed into service to renovate his residence. His crib now sports a shiny black custom hood with 108watts of PC lighting

much happier with his new home, this morning he started adding his own personal touches to it. I heard him merrily whacking away in his bordello this morning.

He is currently recruiting new slaves as well. the astria snail that you see on the glass has been staying high out of reach to shirk any duties. there is another lazy snail in there that spends most of his time sunning himself on his back in the sand, and to my surprise a peppermint shrimp who's supposed to be on aptasia duty that has lasted 2 days so far.

I think that peppermint shrimp better work fast if he wants to get the aptasia before, er.... dinner......

yes, I agree the peppermint is on the short list for dinner guests. Roy has ID'd this fellow as a Gonodactylaceus falcatus which he lists as eating small crustaceans and gastropods so we will have to see how picky he will be on the size of his dinner guests. so far he has left two snails alone in the tank about 5 days. I will be picking up some silversides to feed him shortly.

my new friend decided tonight was the time for an update. He finally revealed his name to me. tonight he decided he has a death wish, and since he was probably after my peppermint shrimp when he tried to commit shrimpiscide I have named him "achmed the dead terrorist" after one of the puppets from jeff dunhams comedy routines. every time he jumps out of his hole to peak at me I can picture him saying "Hello I am lindsey Lohan!" (you really gotta watch the routine I guess)
He jumped into the back chamber of his tank where he managed to get tangled up in the netting that holds the ceramic tubes I use for a bubble trap. I managed to free him from the netting easily enough but he is still trapped back there! too tight to get him out without tearing all the equipment out of the back! Every time I walk by to see if he went into the trap I made for him I can hear him say "SILENCE! I KILL YOU!!!!!!!"

ahhh well. I'll get him out sooner or later!

here's some pics of him trapping himself!
