why is there always an area of blank slanted grass in the outfield of stadiums?

since its so slanted they can't practice anything on that can they?

they leave that blank area blank, so that nothing distracts the hitter while he is at the plate. If you notice it is always in dead center field. By the way, I was at this game as well sitting in my office directly behind that blank area of grass in center field.
