As far as feeding goes, how do they do? I know they'll pick at pods, but will they eat anything else?

my janssi pipefish eat frozen cyclops, mysis and artemia as well as flakes and some other Stuff. Dunno abourt Other Pipefish

My bluestripe pipefish are among the first out at feedings. I've never checked if they take flake food, but they go after pretty much everything frozen as long as they can suck it in.

I have a captive bred banded flagfin pipefish that came trained to eat mysis. I have had it for 2 years in a 36 gallon bowfront tank and it has been an easy fish to keep. It eats from a bowl.

I'm no longer convinced that you actually need to "train" Doryrhamphus species on Mysis. I had most going after them right from the start. At the most they needed to see other fish eat them.
I have at this point the following Doryrhamphus:
7 of D. excisus, Africa, 3 pairs, 1 male
2 of D. melanopleura, Indonesia, pair
1 of D. paulus, Nicaragua, male
2 of D. janssi, Indonesia, 2 males?
All take frozen Mysis from the water column. Some also pick them of the ground.

i just got one and so far it is still thriving after two weeks. it seem to go after frozen foods with other fish.

Verry beautifull that d jansii.I wanted to buy the jansii pipefish and one of the striped ones but ive always feared they need live food like most of the seahorses.Now i feel sorry i didnt buyed them after i read they eat well frozen food.Ive heard they have short lifespan,maybe you breed them.These clearely worth the effort to breed them because they are expensive ,rare and it shouldnt be too hard to rear the fry.

Janssi and bluestripe pipefish go very actively after frozen mysis and are well capable of competing with rather aggressive eaters.
With the Dunckerocampus species I would be more cautious as they don't like high flow as much as the Doryrhampus species (which actually seem to like it if it is in intervals with low flow periods).

Actually, most seahorses now have been trained to eat frozen mysis shrimp.
There are not many wild caught seahorses sold any more, at least here in North America.

I have a pair of dragon faces in a sps reef tons of flow. Doesn't seem to bother them at all. The swim together all day picking pods from the holes in my live rock

Sorry for the thread necromancy. I'm curious, it sounds like flagfins are more resilient than I'd read. Would I be able to keep one in a tank with a Bubble Tip and stinging corals?
